The primary responsibilities of the Billing Accounting Specialist are to apply payments, denials, and correspondence to patient accounts in the revenue cycle management (RCM) system. The Specialist will be required to reconcile payments to amounts received in the bank prior to application of payments in the system. Denials and correspondence may require reading and interpretation to accurately post the information in the system.
This role requires meticulous work and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high volume team environment. This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime as needed, especially at month-end. Candidates within commuting distance of the Brisbane, California office will need to come to the office on a regular basis; remote candidates will work and collaborate from home.
Responsibilities:
- Payment, denial and correspondence posting
- Reconcile electronic or paper remittances and explanations of benefits (EOBs) to bank receipts and apply them to patient accounts in the revenue cycle management system.
- Ensure accurate denial reasons are posted to patient accounts from paper correspondence.
- Assist the supervisor and RCM teammates professionally when requested.
- Mail and Other Duties
- Sort and distribute incoming mail.
- Prepare outgoing mail (claim packages, patient statements, patient letters).
- Prepare refund checks and obtain approvals as needed for refunds to patients and payers.
- Assist with medical record projects as needed.
- Monitor and maintain inventory in the on-site print room.
Minimum Education, Experience, & Specialized Knowledge (Required):
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 6-12 months’ experience in data entry or medical billing; strong preference will be given to candidates with experience posting payments in the Telcor system.
- Typing speed of at least 50 words per minute.
- Understanding of patient protections under HIPAA and proper handling of protected health information (PHI).
- Working knowledge of health insurance and terminology.
- Excellent communication and people skills.
- Meticulous with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities in a high-volume production environment.
