Want to help change the future of retail? Are you looking for a unique and visible role within Trust & Risk Data Science at eBay?
Fast-paced, dynamic, and proactive, eBay’s Trust & Risk team is dedicated to making eBay a safe and trusted platform for the millions of buyers and sellers who make up the eBay community.
Key Trust & Risk initiatives at eBay span platform communications, seller protections and policy experiences, buyer and seller feedback, the eBay Money Back Guarantee, seller performance, new seller onboarding, and transaction risk management. The team is committed to maintaining and enhancing eBay as a safe and reliable marketplace while strengthening how we measure, understand, and reduce transaction-related losses. We continuously improve the customer experience while ensuring eBay remains a secure and trusted global marketplace.
As a Data Scientist in the Trust & Risk team at eBay, you will work directly with Trust and Risk business teams and partner teams across Product, Engineering, Policy, Shipping, and Design to identify opportunities, assess impacts, and integrate insights into business and operational strategies. Your role will involve using advanced analytics and quantitative frameworks to guide marketplace decisions, improve decision quality, reduce transaction risk and losses, and ensure solutions balance customer experience with business outcomes. Additionally, you will help develop the measurement frameworks, analytics infrastructure, and operational strategy required to drive measurable impact and scalability across the Trust & Risk organization.
Responsibilities:
- Drive Strategic Insights: Apply strategic, operational, and analytics processes to shape long-term solutions, influence leaders across Trust & Risk, and identify opportunities to improve customer outcomes while reducing marketplace and transaction risk.
- Analyze & Identify Opportunities: Conduct analysis of key marketplace and transaction risk issues to identify significant opportunities for improving customer experience, strengthening trust, and reducing losses for buyers, sellers, and eBay.
- Define & Monitor Metrics: Develop Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and standardized measurement frameworks to track customer trust, transaction risk, enterprise loss, decision quality, false positives, and residual exposure. Monitor these metrics to understand underlying drivers and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Accountability & Results: Define business objectives and measure progress in achieving results. Commit to goals and lead complex projects focused on enhancing customer experience, improving policy and risk effectiveness, reducing transaction losses, and delivering top- and bottom-line results for eBay.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with leaders across Trust, Risk, Product Management, Engineering, Policy, Shipping, and Design to integrate insights into business strategies, prioritize investments, and maximize impact.
To be successful in this role:
- Educational Background & Experience: Bachelor's degree with 3+ years (or Masters/PhD with 1+ years) of relevant experience across at least two areas such as Quantitative Research, Analytics, or Data Science.
- Data Analysis Expertise: Skilled in recognizing trends, patterns, and implications within complex data to support informed decision-making and quantify business impact.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in programming (Python/R) and data querying (SQL).
- Problem-Solving: Strong creativity and structured thinking in solving complex and ambiguous problems.
- Execution & Results: Proven ability to deliver measurable results in challenging situations.
- Customer & Business Advocacy: Experience balancing customer experience, risk, and business outcomes, and synthesizing diverse perspectives to achieve alignment.
- Communication with Leaders: Ability to translate complex analyses and insights into clear recommendations for senior-level executives.
- Availability: Flexible and capable of working remotely across multiple time zones. Regular availability is required for meetings between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM (PDT).
Additionally, the following background and experience is helpful:
- Prior experience in marketplace Trust, Risk, fraud, or transaction risk analytics.
- Experience developing measurement frameworks for areas such as loss, decision quality, false positives, risk exposure, or return on investment.
- Ability to present complex analyses and insights effectively in simple terms.
- Experience in a leading technology company.
- Background in e-commerce products, marketplaces, payments, or shipping.
- Experience with Natural Language Processing or LLM/GenAI is a plus.
