Motor Controls Engineer

General Matter

Los Angeles, CA

About the Company

General Matter enriches uranium.

We are designing, building, and operating the world’s lowest-cost enrichment services, here in the US.

In the process, we are restoring America’s ability to produce nuclear fuel to power AI, advanced manufacturing and critical industries our country relies on to remain competitive.

Fuel drives the cost of advanced reactor electricity production, and enrichment drives the cost of the fuel that advanced reactors consume. Reliable, low-cost enrichment is the catalyst for the nuclear Renaissance now under way.

Our mission is to make nuclear not only the cleanest and safest source of baseload power, but also the most affordable. We believe abundant nuclear energy will lead to a post-scarcity society.

We were incubated inside Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and are backed by over a dozen of the world's top venture capital firms.

Our lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production.

We are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability, and transparency.

Help us build a high-energy society by making the cleanest, safest form of baseload energy the most affordable.

About This Role

As a Motor Controls Engineer, you will design, develop, and implement the control algorithms and software that run the electric motors, drives, and motion systems at the core of our enrichment technology. This role spans control-oriented modeling, motor and motion control design, state estimation and monitoring, and hands-on integration and calibration across simulation, bench, and integrated hardware. You will work with hardware throughout the lifecycle, from early prototypes through deployed systems, partnering closely with power electronics, firmware, systems integration, and mechanical teams.

Open to multiple levels of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop control-oriented models of motors, drives, and rotating machinery for analysis, control design, and estimation.
  • Design and implement motor and motion control algorithms to maximize system capability, performance, and flexibility.
  • Develop estimation and monitoring algorithms to maximize system safety and reliability, including state, speed, and fault estimation.
  • Evaluate novel subsystems and architectures related to motor control and drive systems to inform product decisions.
  • Work with power electronics, firmware, and integration engineers to test, debug, and calibrate algorithms in simulation and on hardware.
  • Ensure stability and performance of algorithms using software-in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tools, on the bench and in integrated systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate motor controls with mechanical, power electronics, firmware, and process systems.
  • Develop technical documentation and specifications for internal use, vendors, and contractors.
  • Support testing, commissioning, and ongoing system improvements across R&D and facility deployments.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong background in first-principles linear systems analysis, state estimation, and control design.
  • Fundamental understanding of electric motors and drive systems, such as field-oriented control, sensorless control, and power electronics and inverters.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, analyze, implement, test, and debug control systems from the ground up in real-world applications.
  • Proficiency with engineering development tools such as MATLAB/Simulink and Python, and with software development in C/C++ for embedded or real-time control.
  • Ability to perform trade studies, reason from first principles, and make sound engineering decisions with incomplete information.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
  • Evidence of exceptional ability (prior projects, portfolio of work, completed products, etc).

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Expertise in advanced control and estimation techniques and optimal control.
  • Experience with high-speed motors, precision motion control, or rotating machinery.
  • Experience with power electronics, motor drives, and real-time embedded control implementation.
  • Experience developing control systems for industrial, R&D, or other regulated or safety-critical environments.
  • Advanced degrees.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment, balancing technical rigor with practical constraints.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.
