Hudson River Trading (HRT) brings a scientific approach to trading financial products. We build and operate one of the world’s most sophisticated computing environments for research and development, and our engineers work on challenging problems across hardware, systems, networking, AI/ML and software.

Hudson River Trading (HRT) is seeking a Data Center Engineer to join our Compute team. Our engineers build and operate the global computing infrastructure that supports HRT’s research and automated trading environment around the clock.

In this hands-on role, you will help deploy, operate, and improve high-density compute, storage, and network infrastructure in a regional colocation environment. You will combine Linux and networking fundamentals with a meticulous approach to hardware, cabling, automation, and operational excellence. This is an opportunity to work on complex infrastructure problems, collaborate with distributed engineering teams, and make a direct impact on the reliability and performance of a sophisticated research computing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute deployment plans for new servers, storage, and network hardware, with attention to power, cooling, cabling, rack layout, and network topology
  • Install, configure, test, and troubleshoot enterprise-grade server, storage, and networking equipment
  • Develop and maintain automation for inventory management, configuration deployment, health checks, and recurring operational workflows using Python, Bash, or similar tools
  • Diagnose system performance and stability issues using command-line tools, including log analysis, process tracing, and IPMI/SEL event review
  • Troubleshoot connectivity and performance issues across network layers 1–3, including high-speed copper and fiber interconnects, switching, routing, and physical-layer faults
  • Build, test, document, and maintain structured cabling for high-density copper and single- and multi-mode fiber environments
  • Support the evaluation, deployment, and ongoing operation of GPU and other accelerated-computing systems; investigate hardware failures and coordinate repair or replacement as needed
  • Maintain accurate asset, inventory, and DCIM records; coordinate equipment logistics, vendor engagement, RMAs, and spare-parts readiness
  • Uphold and improve standards for physical security, configuration management, safety, documentation, and audit readiness
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and respond effectively to infrastructure incidents

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in a high-density, mission-critical data center, colocation, cloud, HPC, research, or similarly demanding environment
  • Exposure to Linux/Unix systems-administration and comfort working from the command line
  • Hands-on experience installing, configuring, testing, and troubleshooting server hardware, including CPUs, memory, storage, power supplies, and network interfaces
  • Strong knowledge of networking fundamentals across layers 1–3, with the ability to isolate complex connectivity, signal, and latency issues
  • Experience designing, installing, certifying, and troubleshooting high-speed copper and fiber-optic cabling
  • Familiarity with DCIM tools, asset management, inventory processes, and data center operational practices
  • Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and clear written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with global teams and external vendors
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Preferred experience deploying, operating, or troubleshooting GPU servers and accelerated-computing platforms, including structured failure analysis and hardware diagnostics
  • Preferred experience with high-density cooling systems, including direct-to-chip (DTC) or direct liquid cooling (DLC)
  • Preferred familiarity with HPC, high-performance storage, or large-scale compute-cluster environments
  • Preferred experience writing scripts or automation using Python, Bash, Shell, or similar languages
  • Preferred familiarity with network hardware, optics, and high-speed interconnect technologies
