RESPONSIBILITIES
- Patient Care & Counseling Review and interpret prescriptions to ensure accuracy, detect potential drug interactions, and ensure optimal patient care. Counsel patients on medication therapy, including dosing, administration, mechanism of action, and potential adverse effects. Answer all questions from providers, patients, and caregivers about medication therapies, ensuring clear communication and understanding.
- Pharmacy Operations Oversee all aspects of pharmacy operations, including order processing, inventory management, and compliance with state and federal regulations. Monitor and maintain accurate inventory levels, handling medication orders, ensuring proper utilization of inventory, overseeing returns and recalls, and paying particular attention to temperature-sensitive drugs. Supervise and provide feedback to pharmacy support personnel, ensuring accuracy and compliance with safety protocols. Assist in training new pharmacy team members, supporting their professional development.
- Compliance & Regulation Ensure pharmacy operations meet state Board of Pharmacy, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards. Maintain thorough knowledge of current and pending drug laws and advise management on necessary actions to stay compliant. Protect patient privacy by operating in compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies. Ensure that all pharmacy processes, documentation, and patient interactions comply with URAC and ACHC standards, focusing on maintaining accreditation status.
- Continuous Learning & Quality Improvement Stay informed about pharmacological advancements and legislative changes through professional development opportunities, workshops, and publications. Participate in Quality Management activities and provide input on areas needing quality improvement, reporting to the Quality Management Committee as necessary.
- Additional Responsibilities Adapt to evolving responsibilities as the organization grows, taking on new tasks and roles as needed. Perform other duties as assigned by management to support pharmacy operations and overall patient care. Work collaboratively with other departments to support organizational initiatives and promote company growth.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Understanding of URAC, ACHC, and other regulatory standards, ensuring compliance in daily operations.
- Strong attention to detail, ensuring thoroughness and accuracy in medication preparation, inventory management, and documentation.
- Strong understanding of physiological functions, disease states, and therapeutic interventions, particularly in specialty areas such as oncology, rheumatology, neurology, or gastroenterology, etc.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and working knowledge of pharmacy management systems and database applications.
- Excellent communication skills—both oral and written—with the ability to counsel patients and collaborate with healthcare providers.
- Proven ability to manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and resolve conflicts professionally.
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective patient and provider interactions.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities for effective decision-making in fast-paced environments.
- Commitment to quality improvement and maintaining high standards of patient care.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE, & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy (RPh) or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) required.
- Must have a current, valid, and unrestricted pharmacy licensure, as required by the state(s) of practice.
- 1-2 years of pharmacy experience, preferably in a specialty pharmacy setting.
- Depending on the state, registration with the state board of pharmacy may be required.
