Job Description:

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture is currently seeking an Auditor/Cost Accountant to join their team. This position works directly with the seven external and four internal commodity boards: Corn, Wheat, Grain Sorghum, Dry Bean, Ethanol, Dry Pea & Lentil, Dairy, Grape & Wine, Craft Brewery, Potato, and Poultry. The primary duty is reviewing records for check-off reporters to confirm compliance with statutory requirements. This is the only position that completes compliance audits for the entire state, some travel may be required to visit firms with physical documents.

Job Duties:

  • Manage budgets as set by each commodity board.
  • Pre-audit payables and receivables for compliance with State Accounting and Board policies.
  • Audit first purchasers for statutory compliance with collecting and reporting check-off.
  • Prepare financial reports and analyses.
  • Attend Board meetings.
  • Provide direction to Boards on requirements of State Agencies such as fixed assets, budget upload, inventory, and procurement.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in business administration or accounting.

Legal Requirements: Positions in this classification are subject to Title 42, Nebraska Administrative Code, Chapter 1 – Minimum Standards for Government Employees Identified as Auditors. The basic requirement is a Bachelor’s degree in business administration or the equivalent, with at least 24 semester hours of accounting or auditing. Any combination of education with a concentration in accounting and auditing experience acceptable to the Auditor of Public Accounts, may be substituted for the educational requirements in Section 002.01.

Other: This position requires travel. As such, the incumbent must be able to present a valid driver's license or another form of reliable transportation. Regular and Reliable attendance is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Experience with MS Office, specifically Microsoft Excel. Ability to explain and simplify complex policies and statutes. Communicating information in an efficient and professional manner.
