Job Summary:

Key Responsibilities

  • Field Work Assist in preparing field research trials on diseases of tree fruits and wine grapes.
  • Survey for diseases, collect, process, and preserve disease samples.
  • Record and organize data from field trials and perform basic statistical analyses.
  • Laboratory Work - Duties include the technical assistance in a plant pathology laboratory. Including, but not limited to media preparation for culturing bacterial and fungal pathogens of tree fruits and wine grapes, processing field samples for pathogen isolation, microbial culture collection and management, data entry into electronic format, and perform basic statistical analyses. The applicant will be required to use and operate various laboratory equipment such as an autoclave, pH meter, laminar flow hood, microscopes, PCR and qPCR thermocyclers, microcentrifuge, gel electrophoresis etc.
  • Lab management - The candidate will perform routine to complex technical or specialized tasks in support of research. It includes, but are not limited to maintaining laboratory cleanliness, monitoring supply of laboratory consumables and reagents and alerting FRA when reordering is necessary, maintaining laboratory protocols, and maintenance of lab equipment.
  • Miscellaneous - Participate in group meetings, discussions, necessary safety training and SOREC staff events, and training new student assistants.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Two years of college-level courses in biological sciences; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and follow scientific protocols.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions for an extended period of time.
  • Positive attitude to work in a team environment.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Must be proficient in basic lab techniques such as making buffers, media preparation, centrifugation, pipetting, and weighing.
  • Demonstrated ability in data organization, management, analysis, and communications using Microsoft Office suite or similar software

Working Conditions/Schedule:

We are looking to continue employment of a summer intern through winter by transitioning them to a Temp position (intern funding is ending). They've already been doing the job we're asking for an exemption for. Employee is Corrine Pouliot, ID 972018746.

Salary Range:

$18.06 - $23.88
