Deputy General Manager-Global Engineering
Job Description
The Global Engineering & Maintenance Lead will lead the central Engineering and Maintenance team and partner with all 17 PPL sites to transform site E&M performance in line with the enterprise level global engineering roadmap. The role will establish consistent standards, strengthen asset reliability and lifecycle management, accelerate maintenance excellence and digital adoption, and build the technical capabilities and collaborative culture required to bring PPL E&M practices toward peer global pharmaceutical standards.
1. Enterprise E&M Strategy and Transformation
- Own and continuously refine the PPL Engineering & Maintenance excellence strategy, maturity model and phased transformation roadmap.
- Benchmark PPL practices against leading global pharmaceutical companies and translate relevant practices into practical enterprise standards.
- Partner with site leadership to develop short-, medium- and long-term reliability and asset lifecycle plans aligned with business continuity, compliance and investment priorities.
- Act as the central technical escalation point for significant engineering reliability and maintenance risks.
2. Asset Reliability and Lifecycle Management
- Lead asset health, infrastructure, laboratory equipment and operational technology assessments, ensuring risks are prioritized by criticality and business impact.
- Drive year-on-year refurbishment, replacement and obsolescence plans for critical process, utility, infrastructure, laboratory and automation assets.
- Strengthen preventive, predictive, condition-based, reliability-centered and autonomous maintenance practices to move sites from reactive to risk-based maintenance.
- Ensure robust failure analysis, root cause analysis, CAPA effectiveness, lessons learned and horizontal deployment across sites.
3. Maintenance Excellence and Standardization
- Drive adoption and sustained compliance of global foundational guidelines covering asset registers, criticality, planned and unplanned maintenance, spares, lifecycle management, contractor evaluation, competence and performance measurement.
- Establish consistent governance for PM compliance, MTBF, MTTR, breakdowns, production-impacting failures, maintenance cost, backlog, calibration and other agreed KPIs.
- Lead critical equipment and spare-parts strategies, including BOM quality, ABC/VED classification, lead-time risk, stocking norms and opportunities for regional or shared inventory.
- Promote disciplined work management, maintenance planning and scheduling, vendor performance management and continuous improvement.
4. Digital Engineering and Technology Enablement
- Provide functional leadership for CMMS deployment and integration, including standardized workflows, master data, work orders, asset history, maintenance backlog, dashboards and spares management.
- Advance predictive maintenance through IoT sensors, condition monitoring, analytics and scalable use cases.
- Partner with Digital, IT, Automation, EHS, Quality and site teams on OT assessments, legacy system upgrades, cybersecurity readiness, EMS, MES and Industry 4.0 priorities.
- Ensure technology choices improve reliability, data integrity, regulatory readiness and user adoption.
5. Governance, Performance and Investment
- Operate a strong three-tier governance cadence covering site, regional and global reviews, with clear accountability and timely escalation.
- Maintain enterprise dashboards and provide concise, data-based updates to senior leadership on progress, risks, benefits and required decisions.
- Support risk-based capital prioritization and business cases for reliability, obsolescence, compliance and operational resilience investments.
- Confirm that benefits are sustained through audits, maturity reviews, action tracking and site ownership.
6. People, Capability and Collaboration
- Lead and develop the central Engineering and Maintenance team, clarifying roles, priorities and performance expectations.
- Influence site Engineering Heads and cross-functional leaders , building commitment to common standards and outcomes.
- Drive technical competency frameworks, iLead or equivalent capability programs, critical-role mapping, succession planning and knowledge-transfer mechanisms.
- Create and mobilize global SME pools and communities of practice to solve recurring issues and share best practices.
- Build a “we maintain” culture through partnership between Engineering, Operations and Quality.

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Instrumentation, Industrial or related Engineering discipline. A relevant master's degree or management qualification is desirable.
- Typically 15+ years of progressive experience in engineering, maintenance, reliability or technical operations within pharmaceutical, biotechnology or another highly regulated Pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated experience in a central, corporate or global engineering function, with responsibility for multi-site transformation, governance and standardization.
- Preferred experience in a reputed global pharmaceutical company and exposure to manufacturing sites across multiple countries or regions.
- Proven leadership of maintenance excellence, asset reliability, lifecycle/obsolescence management, utilities and infrastructure, engineering standards and digital maintenance programs.
- Working knowledge of GMP expectations, quality systems, EHS requirements and regulatory readiness relevant to pharmaceutical engineering operations.
- Experience with CMMS/EAM, SAP PM or equivalent platforms, predictive maintenance, IoT/condition monitoring, OT and performance dashboards is strongly preferred.
