Director, Risk Management
Department: Legal Reports To: Chief Legal Officer Location: Orlando, FL (Corporate) Travel: Up to 25%
The Director, Risk Management is responsible for leading the Company's enterprise risk management strategy, insurance programs, and risk mitigation initiatives across United Parks & Resorts. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, this role partners closely with executive leadership and business stakeholders to identify, assess, and minimize operational, financial, regulatory, and reputational risk while supporting the Company's strategic objectives.
This position oversees the Company's property and casualty insurance portfolio, claims management strategy, business continuity planning, and enterprise risk initiatives. The Director serves as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, balancing operational needs with proactive risk management practices that protect the Company, its guests, ambassadors, animals, and assets.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead the Company's enterprise risk management (ERM) program, identifying and evaluating risks across all business functions and park operations.
- Develop and execute strategies to mitigate operational, financial, legal, environmental, and reputational risk.
- Manage the Company's comprehensive insurance portfolio, including property, casualty, general liability, workers' compensation, cyber liability, directors & officers liability, and other commercial insurance programs.
- Oversee relationships with insurance brokers, carriers, third-party administrators, actuaries, and external consultants.
- Direct insurance renewals, underwriting submissions, policy negotiations, and coverage analysis to optimize protection while managing total cost of risk.
- Provide oversight of significant liability, property damage, and workers' compensation claims, partnering with Legal, HR, Finance, Safety, and Operations as appropriate.
- Analyze claims trends and loss data to identify opportunities for operational improvements and risk reduction.
- Partner with Legal on litigation strategy involving insured claims and complex liability matters.
- Develop and maintain enterprise risk assessments, reporting findings and recommendations to executive leadership.
- Lead business continuity and crisis preparedness initiatives, ensuring plans remain current and operationally effective.
- Collaborate with Corporate Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Security, Finance, Human Resources, Operations, and other functional leaders to promote a proactive risk management culture.
- Support acquisitions, strategic initiatives, and major capital projects by conducting risk assessments and insurance due diligence.
- Monitor emerging risks, regulatory developments, and industry trends affecting the Company.
- Prepare executive-level reporting and presentations regarding enterprise risk, insurance performance, and claims metrics.
- Manage departmental budget, vendor performance, and risk management technology solutions.
- Lead, coach, and develop members of the Risk Management team.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business Administration, Legal Studies, or related field required.
- Master's degree, MBA, or JD preferred.
Experience
- 10+ years of progressive experience in corporate risk management, insurance, or related discipline.
- Experience leading enterprise risk and insurance programs for a large, multi-location organization.
- Experience managing commercial insurance renewals and complex liability claims.
- Demonstrated success partnering with executive leadership on strategic risk initiatives.
- Hospitality, entertainment, theme park, resort, or consumer-facing industry experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of commercial insurance coverages and risk financing strategies.
- Working knowledge of enterprise risk management frameworks.
- Understanding of claims administration, litigation management, and regulatory compliance.
- Excellent analytical and financial acumen with the ability to evaluate risk exposure and cost implications.
- Exceptional negotiation and vendor management skills.
- Ability to communicate complex risk concepts to executive and non-technical audiences.
- Strong leadership, influencing, and relationship-building abilities.
- Experience presenting to executive leadership and boards or board committees preferred.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with risk management information systems (RMIS) preferred.
