St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a Sign Technician for our well-established Traffic Division in our Public Works Department whose headquarters are located in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.

The St. Johns County Traffic Division is responsible for the maintenance of St. Johns County traffic signals, street lights and street signs.

Employees work cooperatively as part of crews to complete work in a safe and effective manner. Safety is the #1 priority at Traffic. The goal at Traffic is to provide a safe and efficient transportation system to ensure the mobility of people, goods and services in St. Johns County.

The newly selected Traffic Signal Technician will work independently and as a member of a Traffic Signal crew to complete the work necessary to maintain St. Johns County’s traffic signal and streetlights.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Installs traffic signs.
  • Maintains sign visibility and reflectivity.
  • Installs thermo, painted, and raised pavement markings.
  • Enters work information into database.
  • Assists other departments as needed.
  • Cleans and restocks sign shop.
  • Assists in the fabrication of traffic signs.
  • Responds to emergency repair needs.
  • Locates signs using GPS and enters into related database.
  • Operates lift truck, bucket truck, and fork-lift.
  • Operates paint sprayer, pressure washer, thermal torch, and pole saw.
  • Maintains assigned vehicle and equipment.
  • Maintains a full-time presence on the job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain IMSA Sign Technician Certification Level 1 within two (2) years from date of hire.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain Maintenance of Traffic – Intermediate Certification within one (1) year
  • from date of hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills to serve others.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
  • Must be able to operate a computer.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Knowledge of the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signs
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Skill in the operation of sign maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Skill in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

  • Working Conditions may include some exposure to environmental changes (e.g., outdoor weather and/or field conditions, warehouses, garages, etc.), extreme noises, odors, heights and/or dust.
  • Essential Physical Activities: Stooping, sitting, crouching, walking, climbing on uneven surfaces, pulling and/or lifting 50 lb regularly throughout the day and one hundred lb on occasion, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pulling, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception.
