Compensation Range:

$77,600.00 - $116,400.00

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

Administers and promotes the University's intellectual property programs, including assurance of University compliance with regulations, disposition of technology disclosures, and providing marketing and management support for technology transfer activities. Negotiates and maintains license agreements. Manages activities related to the patent application filing and maintenance process.

The Licensing Manager will have the responsibility for maintaining contact with University personnel at all levels, including researchers and deans, department chairs and research administrators as necessary. The Licensing Manager will have contact with external patent counsel and industry representatives. Additionally, they will have contact with various federal grant personnel and corporate sponsors in assuring compliance with regulations.

Assumes responsibility for special projects and studies. Develops or coordinates the development of educational tools or assists with the development of University-wide or internal policies.

Assists in presentations and training workshops to the University community regarding technology transfer and small business formation.

Essential Functions:

• Develops and implements strategies for the commercialization of University innovations. Markets University technology. Identifies potential licensees and negotiates licensing agreements that align with the University’s mission and financial goals. Monitors compliance with licensing agreements and manages ongoing relationships with licensees to ensure the successful commercialization of technologies..
• Negotiates and maintains license agreements. Maintains an organized and up-to-date IP portfolio, including tracking patent applications, issued patents, and other relevant documentation. Manages activities related to the patent application filing and maintenance process.
• Maintains the administrative and financial systems support to program. Prepares detailed reports on licensing activities, technology transfer outcomes, and financial performance for internal stakeholders. Ensures University compliance with federal and other sponsor requirements.
• Provides counsel, advice and expertise to faculty on intellectual property (IP) matters. Collaborates with researchers and legal counsel to secure patents and other forms of IP protection. Receives and takes appropriate action on technology disclosures.
• Provides education and training to faculty, researchers, and students on IP management, technology transfer processes, and commercialization strategies. Assists in the management of patent application filings and maintenance.
• Conducts market research to identify potential markets and applications for University technologies. Keeps abreast of trends, policies, and procedures as they relate to the field by self-study, attending seminars and courses which enhance personal development and strengthen the user function.
• Assist ORPA with Research Agreements, Material Transfer Agreements and Confidentiality Agreements. Serves as a resource for faculty on intellectual property and commercialization matters.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education & Experience:

• Bachelor's degree required preferably in engineering and particularly biomedical engineering
• An advanced degree in business, law or the sciences is highly preferred.
• Strong preference for experience in high-technology biomedical business, with interest in startup companies. An advanced degree in business, law or the sciences is highly preferred.
• 3 years of relevant experience required
• Or equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Strong knowledge of intellectual property law and technology licensing required
• Proven experience negotiating and managing complex licensing agreements required
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders required
• Strong analytical and strategic thinking abilities, with a focus on market-driven commercialization required
• Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team required
