POSITION SUMMARY
The Mechanic / Class A Driver is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and operating company vehicles, equipment, trailers, and tools used in support of mechanical construction operations. This position supports both shop and field operations by keeping equipment in safe working condition, transporting materials and equipment to job sites, and assisting crews as needed. The role requires strong mechanical ability, safe driving practices, knowledge of DOT requirements, and a commitment to safety, productivity, and professionalism.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate Class A commercial vehicles, trailers, and related equipment in a safe and professional manner.
- Transport tools, materials, equipment, piping, ductwork, fabricated assemblies, and other construction-related items between the shop, warehouse, fabrication facility, and job sites.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and document vehicle condition in accordance with company and DOT requirements.
- Secure loads properly using chains, binders, straps, tarps, and other approved methods.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on company trucks, trailers, small equipment, and jobsite support equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, brake, tire, and lighting issues and complete repairs or coordinate service as needed.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection logs, repair documentation, fuel records, and assigned paperwork.
- Assist with loading and unloading materials and equipment using forklifts, lifts, rigging equipment, or manual handling as required.
- Support jobsite mobilization and demobilization by delivering and picking up tools, equipment, and materials.
- Keep assigned vehicles, tools, and work areas clean, organized, and safe.
- Communicate equipment issues, delivery updates, repair needs, and safety concerns to supervision in a timely manner.
- Follow all company safety policies, DOT regulations, OSHA requirements, traffic laws, and site-specific rules.
- Assist field crews, warehouse personnel, and fabrication teams when needed to support project schedules and operational needs.
- All other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
- Current DOT medical card and ability to comply with applicable DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements.
- Experience operating commercial vehicles, trailers, and construction-related transport equipment.
- Mechanical experience with trucks, trailers, diesel equipment, small engines, hydraulic systems, brakes, electrical systems, and general construction equipment.
- Ability to read and understand work orders, inspection forms, delivery paperwork, safety requirements, and basic equipment documentation.
- Ability to safely lift, carry, push, and pull materials and tools as required for the position.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and respond to changing field and shop needs.
- Strong attention to detail, dependability, and commitment to safe work practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working for a mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, piping, or construction contractor.
- Experience with forklifts, telehandlers, skid steers, lifts, trailers, and material handling equipment.
- Knowledge of construction jobsite logistics, material staging, fabrication shop support, and equipment coordination.
- Basic welding, fabrication, or metal repair experience.
- This is a mid – senior level position.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Must be able to work in shop, warehouse, yard, and active construction jobsite environments.
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, climb, kneel, and lift as required throughout the workday.
- Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and around moving equipment, traffic, and construction activity.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment, including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, high-visibility clothing, and safety footwear.
- May be required to work overtime, early mornings, evenings, weekends, or travel to job sites based on operational needs.
