About the Team
Walmart is seeking a Systems and Infrastructure Engineer III to support and operate the Walmart Cloud Native Platform (WCNP) — Walmart's enterprise Kubernetes platform powering thousands of cloud-native workloads across global production environments. This is a platform support and operations role that demands strong hands-on expertise in Kubernetes, container networking, load balancing, CI/CD tooling, and observability. The successful candidate will partner closely with application teams to deliver reliable platform operations, drive automation to eliminate toil, and build AI-assisted tooling to accelerate incident response and platform efficiency. A solid understanding of container networking, traffic management, and load balancing is essential for success in this role.
What You'll Do
Platform Support and Operations: Serve as a primary support contact for WCNP-hosted workloads across production and non-production environments, managing cluster health, workload triage, incident response, and on-call operations to meet platform SLOs.
Cluster Build, Upgrade and Maintenance: Participate in provisioning and hardening new WCNP clusters, plan and execute cluster version upgrades with node pool rotations and control plane validations, and perform routine maintenance including node patching, certificate rotation, and etcd health checks.
CI/CD Pipeline Support: Build, maintain, and troubleshoot CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins/GitHub Actions equivalent, integrating compliance gates and security scans and supporting application teams in adopting Golden Path deployment standards.
Observability and Incident Response: Troubleshoot issues using monitoring solutions using Prometheus, Grafana and OpenObserve; build dashboards and alerting rules; and produce well-documented RCAs to drive preventive action and reduce MTTR.
Networking and Load Balancing Support: Provide hands-on support for container networking and traffic management — Kubernetes Services, Ingress controllers, Istio service mesh, DNS, TLS termination, and load balancer configurations — diagnosing and resolving east-west and north-south traffic issues.
Configuration and Change Management: Author, validate, and manage KITT configurations (Helm-based), Kubernetes manifests, RBAC, and network policies, coordinating all changes through ServiceNow Change Management with full version control and peer review.
Capacity Planning and Right-Sizing: Analyse workload resource utilisation across namespaces and node pools, and implement right-sizing strategies, HPA/VPA configurations, and autoscaler policies to balance cost and service-level targets.
Security and Compliance: Implement and audit Kubernetes RBAC, Pod Security Standards, Network Policies, and secrets management; integrate container image scanning into pipelines; and support compliance reviews against PCI-DSS, SOC2, and Walmart InfoSec standards.
Cross-Team Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing: Partner with application, SRE, and security teams to onboard services onto WCNP, resolve platform blockers, and contribute to run books, playbook, and platform documentation.
Automation and DevOps: Design and implement automation pipelines using Concord and Looper to eliminate manual toil in deployments, provisioning, and remediation workflows, and build reusable Helm charts to standardise platform operations.
AI-Assisted Automation and Tooling Development: Develop operational tools and utilities leveraging Python scripting and AI/LLM APIs — including log analysis assistants, alert triage helpers, and run book automation agents — to reduce manual effort and improve support response quality.
What You'll Bring
Bachelor's/Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field with 6+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, platform operations, or DevOps roles.
Kubernetes Expertise: Deep, hands-on experience with Kubernetes administration and operations — cluster lifecycle management, workload diagnostics, RBAC, autoscaling (HPA, VPA, Cluster Autoscaler), and multi-cluster management. Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) preferred.
Networking and Load Balancing: Strong understanding of Kubernetes networking — Services, Ingress controllers, CoreDNS, CNI plugins, and Network Policies. Hands-on experience with Istio service mesh for traffic management, mTLS, and L4/L7 load balancing in containerised environments.
Cloud-Native Platform Knowledge: Strong experience with enterprise Kubernetes platforms such as GKE, or AKS. Familiarity with Helm for deployment configuration and internal developer platform standards.
DevOps and CI/CD: Strong experience with CI/CD pipeline tools such as Jenkins or GitHub Actions. Proficiency in GitOps workflows and progressive delivery strategies. Familiarity with policy-as-code tools like OPA or Kyverno (deployment gate system).
Coding, Scripting, and Automation Tooling: Proficiency in Python and Bash for operational automation and tooling development. Ability to build lightweight CLI tools and automation scripts integrating with platform APIs.
Observability: Hands-on experience with Prometheus, Grafana, OpenObserve, or Datadog for SLO-based alerting, operational dashboards, and log-based health monitoring.
Cloud Platforms: Experience with GCP or Azure, deploying and operating containerised workloads in cloud-native environments.
Security and Compliance: Working knowledge of Kubernetes RBAC, Pod Security Standards, Network Policies, mTLS, secrets management (Vault, ExternalSecrets), and compliance frameworks including PCI-DSS and SOC2.
AI and Automation: Basic knowledge of AI/LLM API integration and prompt engineering to build operational tools such as log analysis assistants, alert triage helpers, and runbook automation agents. Curiosity to apply emerging AI capabilities to reduce operational toil.
Incident Management: Experience in L2/L3 incident triage, root cause analysis, post-incident reviews, and on-call operations with a focus on reliability improvements.
