This opportunity spans a range of experienced architecture scope. Depending on your background, you may lead architecture for complex programs or operate across multiple programs and portfolios, establishing standards, governance, modernization patterns, and strategic technology direction.

The work:

  • Define target-state architectures, modernization roadmaps, technology standards, integration patterns, and architectural governance for complex federal systems and programs.
  • Lead enterprise and solution architecture discussions with client leaders, engineering teams, platform teams, security, product stakeholders, and delivery leadership.
  • Assess current-state environments, technical debt, dependencies, risks, vendor/platform options, modernization opportunities, and architecture tradeoffs.
  • Guide cloud transformation, application modernization, enterprise integration, API strategy, data architecture, security alignment, and scalable product/platform patterns.
  • Create and communicate architecture artifacts, decision records, reference architectures, standards, principles, roadmaps, and implementation guidance.
  • Align architecture decisions to mission outcomes, business priorities, security constraints, delivery realities, cost, maintainability, and long-term technical strategy.
  • Mentor architects and technical leaders and help teams resolve ambiguity and complex cross-domain technical decisions.
  • Use AFS-approved AI-assisted tools and workflows to accelerate architecture analysis, documentation, option assessment, and technical research while applying expert judgment and validating outputs.
  • At broader scope, establish architecture governance and standards across programs or portfolios and advise senior stakeholders on transformation investments and enterprise technology direction.

Here’s what you need:

  • Professional experience leading architecture for enterprise, cloud, application, integration, data, platform, or modernization initiatives, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience creating architecture roadmaps, target states, standards, design patterns, decision records, and technical strategies.
  • Broad understanding of cloud platforms, application architecture, APIs, data, enterprise integration, security, platform engineering, and delivery constraints.
  • Experience evaluating technical tradeoffs, modernization paths, risk, dependencies, and solution options across complex environments.
  • Experience communicating architecture decisions to engineering teams, client stakeholders, delivery leaders, security teams, and executive audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex architecture work, mentor technical leaders, resolve ambiguity, and influence standards beyond a single application or team.
  • For candidates with broader experience, demonstrated success setting technology direction across multiple teams, programs, portfolios, or major transformation initiatives.

Bonus points if you have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Architecture, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience with TOGAF, DoDAF, Zachman, Federal Enterprise Architecture, architecture review boards, or technology governance.
  • Experience with multi-cloud or hybrid cloud, cloud migration, FinOps, zero trust, DevSecOps, data platforms, or enterprise integration.
  • Experience with federal clients, regulated environments, mission systems, COTS/GOTS integration, or large-scale modernization programs.
  • Architecture, cloud, security, or delivery certifications.
  • Experience mentoring architects, engineering leaders, or technical communities of practice across programs.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
