ROLE OVERVIEW
At ButterflyMX, reliable hardware is essential to delivering a dependable access control experience for our customers. We are seeking a hands-on Hardware Engineering Technician to support the Hardware Engineering and Hardware Operations teams across product assembly, testing, troubleshooting, repair, failure analysis, quality validation, supplier quality documentation, and engineering test execution.
This role sits at the practical intersection of electronics, hardware validation, manufacturing operations, field reliability, and quality improvement. The successful candidate will be comfortable working directly with electronic assemblies, intercoms, access control devices, readers, controllers, wireless hardware, test fixtures, cables, power supplies, sensors, and production or prototype hardware.
The Hardware Engineering Technician will help build and test engineering prototypes, execute defined test procedures, document results clearly, troubleshoot failed products, perform repairs where appropriate, support RMA and field-failure investigations, assist with quality and reliability testing, and help document supplier quality audits and corrective actions. This is a hands-on role for someone who is organized, detail-oriented, technically curious, and capable of turning test observations into clear, useful engineering and operations documentation.
This role is ideal for someone with strong standard electronics technician skills, good lab discipline, practical troubleshooting instincts, and the ability to work across Engineering, Operations, Quality, Manufacturing, Support, and external suppliers.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assemble, Configure, and Prepare Hardware
- Assemble, modify, and configure prototype and production hardware.
- Perform soldering, wiring, labeling, fixture setup, and rework.
- Track serial numbers, revisions, configurations, and build status.
- Execute Testing, Validation, and Reliability Support
- Perform electrical, functional, environmental, and reliability testing.
- Support EVT, DVT, PVT, pilot, and production readiness testing.
- Record measurements, anomalies, photos, logs, and pass/fail results.
- Troubleshoot, Analyze, and Repair Failed Products
- Diagnose failed assemblies, field returns, and intermittent hardware issues.
- Investigate electrical, mechanical, thermal, installation, and manufacturing failures.
- Document root cause, repair actions, and final disposition.
- Support Quality, Supplier, and Corrective Action Processes
- Support inspections, supplier audits, quality reviews, and defect investigations.
- Document findings, defects, containment actions, and corrective actions.
- Verify supplier, production, and engineering corrective-action effectiveness.
- Maintain Lab, Fixtures, Equipment, and Documentation
- Maintain safe, organized, ESD-compliant lab and test areas.
- Set up, track, and maintain tools, fixtures, and equipment.
- Create work instructions, test procedures, checklists, and repair guides.
- Partner Across Engineering and Operations
- Support Engineering, Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, and Support teams.
- Assist prototype builds, pilot builds, supplier evaluations, and investigations.
- Communicate findings, risks, blockers, and recommended next steps.
- Solve Practical Problems with Ownership and Tenacity
- Diagnose ambiguous issues across hardware, firmware, manufacturing, and installation.
- Escalate problems with evidence, data, and proposed actions.
- Own assigned builds, tests, investigations, documentation, and repairs
REQUIREMENTS:
- Hands-on electronics technician experience in engineering, manufacturing, test, repair, quality, or lab environments.
- Ability to read schematics, drawings, work instructions, test procedures, and basic mechanical documentation.
- Working knowledge of PCBs, components, cables, connectors, power systems, sensors, controllers, and embedded hardware.
- Proficiency with standard lab tools, soldering, wiring, rework, inspection, assembly, and repair.
- Ability to troubleshoot board, cable, connector, assembly, configuration, and system-level issues.
- Strong documentation discipline for test records, repair notes, inspection findings, photos, logs, and issue summaries.
- Comfortable with spreadsheets, ticketing systems, shared documentation, test logs, and basic data tools.
- Detail-oriented, safety-conscious, ESD-aware, organized, independent, and collaborative across remote teams.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Experience with access control, intercoms, IoT, embedded electronics, low-voltage systems, wireless devices, or cameras.
- Experience supporting EVT, DVT, PVT, pilot builds, production validation, RMAs, supplier quality, or manufacturing test.
- Familiarity with RS-485, Wiegand, OSDP, Ethernet, USB, Wi-Fi, BLE, cellular, relays, and door hardware.
- Experience with environmental, thermal, humidity, vibration, ingress, electrical stress, burn-in, or accelerated reliability testing.
- Familiarity with IPC workmanship, ESD controls, calibration, nonconforming material, corrective actions, and audit documentation.
- Experience with test fixtures, harnesses, adapters, lab setups, production test tools, serial terminals, logs, or firmware loading utilities.
COMPENSATION
The expected base salary range for this position is $85,000-$95,000 Actual compensation will depend on factors including budget, skills, experience, location, and internal equity. This position may also be eligible for bonuses, equity, or other forms of compensation, where applicable.
