Job Description:

Performs maintenance and upkeep, assists in boat handling and public relations and passenger safety duties aboard an historic vessel. Participates in annual vessel and safety training.

Mate is assigned to the excursion boat, Wm. B. Tennison, docked at Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, Maryland, which transits local waters of the Patuxent River and its tributaries. Mate is supervised by the Captain of the Wm. B Tennison.

Essential Job Functions

Performs daily boat upkeep, maintenance, and cleaning above and below deck during operating season (May-October).

Provides narrative over public address system while underway.

Assists with pre-season fitting-out and end of season lay-up.

Assists with minor repairs, maintenance, and preservation of vessel throughout the year.

Ensures that pumps, engine, batteries, and mooring lines are in good working order during lay-up period.

Handles mooring lines.

Implements and enforces boat and water safety procedures.

Other Job Duties (Duties listed are not intended to be all inclusive nor to limit duties that might reasonably be assigned.)

Stores materials and paints.

Assists with loading and debarking passengers, including wheelchair passengers when necessary.

Uses fixed and portable fire fighting equipment if required.

Uses and maintains a variety of life-saving equipment, including life raft and rings, personal flotation devices and flares.

Assists with changing oil in main engine, if required, and checking fluid levels in engine and batteries.

Assists with maintaining charter bookings log.

Performs related work as required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre-employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions.)

Knowledge of--

  • Small craft operation and seamanship.
  • Basic marine engine operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of local history and geography and experience in working with the public.

Ability to--

  • Handle small craft.
  • Speak clearly and distinctly.
  • Perform manual work.
  • Accept commands, follow orders, and get along well with staff, public and volunteers.
  • Deal effectively with the public.

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)

Training and/or Education:

High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience:

Zero to three months of experience on small craft or at sea.

Licenses or Certificates:

Completion of CPR Certification within four weeks of start date.

Special Requirements:

Enrollment in mandatory U.S. Coast Guard drug testing program.

Physical Demands:

Work requires occasional heavy physical effort (must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.)

Unusual Demands:

Required to work weekends and holidays in operating season (May-October).

Nonexempt

Compensation Steps:

Pay rate: $20.94 per hour

Grade H12, temporary position, 17.5 hours per week
