A Brief Overview

Are you a seasoned laboratory professional ready to build something exceptional? We're seeking a Clinical Laboratory Manager to serve as the operational leader and strategic partner in launching a new Hematologic Malignancy Laboratory within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Working within a tripartite leadership structure alongside a Medical Director and Laboratory Director, you'll be the operational engine that transforms vision into daily excellence. You'll establish workflows, build a culture of quality and collaboration, and serve as the critical bridge between laboratory operations and clinical care—ensuring our services meet the complex diagnostic needs of pediatric oncology, bone marrow transplant, and clinical trial programs.

You'll own the day-to-day: Set professional and quality standards for high-complexity testing including bone marrow morphology and flow cytometry. Oversee operations that deliver accurate, timely, and clinically meaningful results for children with hematologic malignancies. Ensure flawless execution across method validation, regulatory compliance, proficiency testing, and quality assurance. Manage operational and capital budgets. Lead, mentor, and develop a highly skilled technical team.

You'll be a strategic collaborator: Partner proactively with bone marrow transplant team, oncology, clinical trials coordinators, and physicians to anticipate needs and optimize service delivery. Serve as the laboratory's operational liaison to clinical stakeholders—translating complex diagnostic capabilities into accessible, actionable information. Work closely with your director partners to evaluate new methods, pilot innovations, and scale the lab's capabilities as institutional needs evolve.

The Manager provides technical, operational and financial leadership for their assigned laboratory section. They set the professional standard by which the section operates. The Manager establishes the working environment in conjunction with established hospital and departmental policies and strictly adheres to and enforces those policies. The Manager partners with section Director(s) to ensure alignment in direction and goal setting for section operations.

What you will do

• Technical/Scientific/InnovationEnsures that all work performed in the section is accurate and completed within established or agreed upon turn around times. Reviews all procedures and makes additions and corrections as necessary Evaluates new methods, techniques or equipment and makes recommendations to the director Serves as a technical resource throughout organization and professional community May publish/present scientific presentations/papers Develops, tests, implements and evaluates new and creative approaches to meeting departmental and institutional goals. Orients new employees and assures completion of all competency assessments and mandatory educations. Partners with Director(s) to develop, validate, and implement new assays or modify existing assays to meet evolving clinical needs Implements workflow improvements within lab and across lab sections
• EducationTakes a leadership role in the continuing education of the section staff. Creates and presents self-developed programs and identifies and enables continuing education opportunities. Assists with orientation, education and training of students, employees, and clinicians in laboratory processes and procedures. Identifies own learning needs and partners with the director or other CHOP resources for remedy. Participates in national and local professional organizations.
• FiscalStrategically plans for and prepares an operating and capital budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Prepares all capital purchases requisitions when assigned and tracks purchasing and delivery progress. Monthly monitors the operating budget and reconciles variance. Maintains appropriate staffing levels and hours worked. Reconciles labor variance.
• Regulatory/Quality AssuranceAssures that all licensing and accreditation requirements are in full compliance. Assures that the section proficiency is fully compliant. Identifies quality assurance markers and assures participation in the department's Quality Assurance program. Serves as primary contact or designates a primary contact for laboratory inspections Partners with the Division of Pathology Informatics to evaluate and establish tools to monitor lab section performance
• LeadershipIs responsible for creating and maintaining a safe and professional work environment that has an efficient workflow. Motivates and mentors the staff to achieve high quality, high efficiency and high morale Constantly reviews and improves systems to achieve optimal operation and institutional goals Demonstrates a leadership presence in the face of change, crisis, conflict and problem solving Supervises and directs all technical and non-technical personnel. Provides effective recognition and feedback to employees in routine 1:1, mid-year reviews, and annual performance evaluations as part of ongoing performance management Schedule work duties Responsible for all technical work performed Creates a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Motivates staff towards high-efficiency work, operational efficiency, and supports their professional growth Serves as an operational bridge between laboratory and clinical services Represents the laboratory to internal and external stakeholders. Responds to inquiries from clinical teams, escalating to laboratory director(s) as appropriate Seeks to work beyond silos, communicating effectively with peers in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine as well as colleagues in external departments and peer institutions Maintains transparent communication with laboratory director(s) regarding operational isues, quality concerns, and strategic opportunities; Provides regular status updates on budget, staffing, regulatory compliance, KPIs, workflow issues; Escalates in a timely manner Demonstrates CHOP's ICARE values and Leadership Competencies

Education Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or other science related fields - Required

Experience Qualifications

• At least five (5) years of practical laboratory experience including instrumentation - Required
• At least one (1) year Supervisory experience - Preferred

Preferred Experience

• Flow cytometry experience
• Hematology experience

SALARY RANGE:

$107,200.00 - $142,100.00 Annually

Salary ranges are shown for full-time jobs. If you're working part-time, your pay will be adjusted accordingly.
