About the team and the role:

eBay’s Traffic Engineering team builds and manages the platforms that handle eBay’s public and private site traffic. The team develops resilient distributed systems at eBay’s edge, including platforms that proxy eBay traffic and service mesh capabilities that support services across eBay with comprehensive observability.

In this role, you will work with cross-functional engineering teams to build and evolve these platforms, solve complex networking and traffic challenges, and contribute to open-source projects. You will have opportunities to lead smaller projects, influence engineering practices, and develop new approaches that improve the performance, resilience, security, and scalability of eBay’s network infrastructure.

What you will accomplish:

  • Design, develop, and maintain traffic management solutions, optimizing network protocols, configurations, Points of Presence (PoPs), and caching strategies to improve system performance and efficiency.
  • Build high-performance applications in C++ and Go and deploy scalable, resilient distributed systems using Kubernetes.
  • Strengthen platform observability by implementing tools and practices that monitor system performance, health, traffic patterns, and security threats.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to integrate networking solutions and identify and resolve issues across systems and functional areas.
  • Contribute to and lead open-source projects while exploring new technologies and approaches that improve network capabilities, including opportunities to develop patented technologies.
  • Lead smaller projects, share advanced engineering practices, and work across functional teams to deliver solutions that address technical and business needs.
  • Continuously improve systems and team outcomes by seeking feedback and keeping current with developments in networking technologies, security practices, and software development.

What you will bring:

  • Experience with cloud networking or traffic management, including TCP/IP networking and familiarity with TCP, SSL, and HTTP protocols.
  • Strong programming skills in C++ and Go; familiarity with additional programming languages such as Java or other frameworks is beneficial.
  • Experience using Kubernetes to orchestrate containerized applications and working with observability tools and practices.
  • Experience with Envoy for traffic control and/or implementing caching strategies and optimizing Points of Presence is beneficial.
  • Experience working with high-traffic, large-scale environments and contributing to or leading open-source projects is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies and experience collaborating effectively across functional engineering teams.
  • Relevant experience with innovation or patent creation, or certifications in networking, Kubernetes, cybersecurity, or related fields, is beneficial.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and benefits.
  • Mentorship and growth opportunities.
  • Exposure to modern tooling and large-scale systems.
