This is responsible work involving program direction, coordination, and implementation at a multipurpose senior activity center for mature adults. The person in this position reports directly to the Senior Center Division Manager of the senior activity center location where assigned.

Job Description:

BUDGETED SALARY: $19.50/HOUR

WORK LOCATION: Senior Centers – Rotation; 4 locations

WORK HOURS: 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:30am-3:30pm

NATURE OF WORK:

This is responsible work involving program direction, coordination, and implementation at a multipurpose senior activity center for mature adults. The person in this position reports directly to the Senior Center Division Manager of the senior activity center location where assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Position is responsible for supporting the daily operations of a senior activity center, which could include planning, implementing, overseeing, and coordinating health, educational, recreational, and nutrition activities
  • Participating in meal service, publicizing center classes and special events and assisting participants with registering for classes and events
  • Providing information about programs and services to seniors and the public
  • Responds to walk-in and telephone inquiries about services and makes a referral to other Office on Aging programs as necessary
  • Maintains records and performs data collection and entry needed to prepare required nutrition and health reports (state and federal government)
  • Supervises staff assigned to the center to provide administrative functions and services
  • Recruits, motivates, and gives direction to senior center front desk, kitchen, and other volunteers
  • Required to perform duties associated with the center’s Congregate meal service program, including set-up, serving, and clean-up of noon meal
  • May act as a liaison between senior activity center committees, councils, and other community senior organizations
  • Required to attend meetings, training, community outreach, and provide coverage as needed at other senior activity centers
  • Identifies maintenance/facility problems and contacts appropriate County staff for assistance
  • May be asked to provide administrative assistance at the main office as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of physical and psychological changes associated with aging and the needs and capacities of older adults
  • Knowledge of senior activity and social interests, and an ability to plan, organize and direct a diversified program of recreational, wellness, education, and socialization activities for older adults
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with the public, seniors, and staff, including at public gatherings
  • Ability to coordinate, train, and supervise paid staff and volunteers
  • Ability to organize schedules of programs
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports
  • Basic computer skills are preferred, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs and agency-specific computer programs
  • Ability to learn, interpret, and apply County and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Ability to be primarily active or physical in nature with intermittent periods of sitting, walking, and standing
  • Ability to set up a room (stacking chairs, moving tables), and lifting/carrying equipment or supplies associated with kitchen and nutrition program tasks
  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds

Education and Experience:

An AA degree (two years of college) in gerontology, psychology, recreation, or other human service-related field and

One (1) year of experience in human services

OR

High school diploma or GED certificate and

Two (2) years of experience (paid or volunteer) in human services or in public -facing customer service

License: Possession of a valid Class C non-commercial driver’s license with no more than three (3) points.

SAFETY: Must comply with all Federal (OSHA), State of Maryland (MOSH), safety regulations and applicable Harford County safety policies, procedures, or manual as required for this position.
