Microservices Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Microservices Engineer based in Ireland.

This role focuses on building scalable, resilient, and high-quality back-end services using Go and Python. You will contribute to APIs and microservices that support millions of clients and critical infrastructure across a global technology ecosystem. The position offers broad exposure to API design, distributed systems, databases, DevOps, security, performance, and multi-region service delivery. You will help evolve engineering practices around scalability, reliability, observability, and continuous delivery. Working within a globally distributed engineering team, you will collaborate across disciplines and contribute to both internal and external technical communities. This is a remote-first opportunity with international collaboration and regular in-person team events.

Accountabilities

• Design, develop, and maintain high-quality, robust software and microservices that operate reliably at significant scale.
• Design APIs and software architectures for peer and technical review, with a focus on maintainability and long-term evolution.
• Build comprehensive automated tests that validate software behavior and service reliability.
• Develop and maintain fault-tolerant applications and distributed services.
• Contribute to API design, documentation, governance, and engineering standards.
• Improve scalability, performance, resilience, and availability across web services and distributed systems.
• Work with relational and non-relational databases, considering performance, reliability, and architectural trade-offs.
• Apply modern DevOps practices across continuous integration, continuous delivery, deployment, monitoring, tracing, and profiling.
• Diagnose complex technical issues, identify root causes, and implement high-quality solutions.
• Contribute to proactive security practices, including fuzzing and other security analysis techniques.
• Collaborate proactively with globally distributed engineering teams and contribute to cross-team technical initiatives.
• Provide technical leadership through design discussions, documentation, mentoring, and engagement with external technical communities.
• Contribute to technical documentation and help establish clear, reusable engineering knowledge.
• Work remotely while participating in international company events approximately twice per year.
• Strong software engineering experience with a track record of building modern, maintainable, and scalable software.
• Proficiency in Python and/or Go.
• Experience designing and operating scalable web services, microservices, or systems software.
• Solid understanding of REST APIs, API architecture, documentation, and service design principles.
• Experience working with relational and non-relational database systems.
• Experience with continuous integration and continuous delivery practices.
• Experience with Linux, preferably Debian or Ubuntu.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, reliability, scalability, and fault-tolerant architecture.
• Professional written and spoken English.
• Strong analytical and debugging abilities, with a practical approach to solving complex engineering problems.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical teams.
• Curiosity, flexibility, accountability, and a strong sense of ownership.
• Self-motivated and results-oriented, with a consistent focus on delivering high-quality outcomes.
• A degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a compelling alternative professional background.
• Additional experience with LXD, Docker, Kubernetes, or other container technologies is valuable.
• Familiarity with build systems, toolchains, or cross-compilation is a plus.
• Experience with hyperscale public or private cloud environments is beneficial.
• Experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems is advantageous.
• Background in performance engineering or application security is a plus.
• Willingness and ability to travel approximately twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.
