Senior Product Manager, APIs

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Product Manager, APIs based in Spain.

As a Senior Product Manager, APIs, you’ll own a technical product area end to end, from product strategy and architecture to adoption and long-term customer experience. You’ll work as a close peer to engineering leadership and staff engineers, contributing directly to technical direction and design decisions. The role combines product management with hands-on technical exploration, including building prototypes and writing functional code to validate ideas and reduce uncertainty. You’ll own API products and integrations, ensuring strong contracts, backwards compatibility, developer experience, and reliable adoption. You’ll work closely with operational specialists to understand real workflows, identify root causes, and prioritize solutions that address meaningful business problems. This is an individual contributor role in a high-growth environment where strong judgment, ownership, experimentation, and clear written communication are highly valued. You’ll have the opportunity to influence products that solve complex operational challenges while working across product, engineering, payroll, tax, and business teams.

Accountabilities

• Own the product area end to end, including product strategy, technical direction, delivery, adoption, and ongoing customer and internal-team experience.
• Partner closely with Engineering Team Leads and Staff Engineers on architecture, design quality, technical decisions, and long-term product direction.
• Form independent and well-reasoned technical opinions, participate confidently in design reviews, and contribute as a peer to engineering stakeholders.
• Build and test prototypes or functional code to de-risk ideas, answer open questions, validate assumptions, and ship smaller solutions directly when appropriate.
• Own API products and integration experiences, including API contracts, versioning, backwards compatibility, reliability, and developer experience.
• Work directly with operational specialists and teams performing manual processes to understand real workflows and identify the root causes of recurring problems.
• Prioritize product improvements based on measurable customer and operational pain points rather than simply addressing symptoms or creating additional reconciliation processes.
• Drive adoption and post-launch hypercare, monitoring whether products continue to be used effectively and deliver value well beyond initial delivery.
• Collaborate closely with payroll and tax specialists to conduct research, understand requirements, and translate complex operational needs into effective product solutions.
• Coordinate across business operations, sales, engineering, and other departments to ensure product decisions address critical business requirements.
• Document product decisions, technical reasoning, proposals, specifications, and other important context clearly in writing.
• Create a culture of transparency and constructive challenge by making product thinking, assumptions, and decisions accessible to relevant stakeholders.
• Use data, experimentation, customer feedback, and operational insights to continuously improve the product and its impact.
• Proven experience as a Product Manager within a high-growth company, preferably in a technically complex B2B environment.
• Demonstrated experience owning products from strategy and discovery through delivery, adoption, and ongoing improvement.
• Strong technical depth and the ability to understand and contribute meaningfully to architecture, APIs, software design, and engineering discussions.
• Proficiency with Cursor and/or Claude Code, with the ability to autonomously build, debug, and ship functional code or prototypes rather than only producing specifications or code snippets.
• Experience working in payroll, HR, benefits, fintech, or another operationally complex domain is highly relevant.
• Strong product judgment, with the ability to make effective strategic prioritization decisions as well as tactical decisions around feature scope and execution.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver self-driven results that materially improve a product, customer experience, or business outcome.
• Strong product design and UX instincts, with a focus on creating products that are intuitive, reliable, and effective.
• Experience designing or managing API products, integrations, developer experiences, API contracts, versioning, and backwards compatibility is highly valuable.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a preference for addressing underlying root causes rather than building workarounds around recurring problems.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, operations, sales, payroll, tax, and other business functions.
• Strong written communication skills, including the ability to document complex product decisions, proposals, requirements, and technical reasoning clearly.
• Business-level proficiency in written and spoken English.
• Ability to work independently, take ownership, make decisions with incomplete information, and operate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• Previous experience working remotely and asynchronously is a plus.
• Experience incorporating AI into customer-facing products is valuable.
• Annual salary range of $59,900–$168,500 USD, with actual compensation determined by factors such as location, transferable or job-related skills, experience, relevant training, business needs, and market conditions.
