The Ohio State University Newark campus serves undergraduate students pursuing any of the university’s 200+ majors, including several degree programs that can be completed entirely at Newark. The Undergraduate Academic Advisor 2 position provides academic advising and support to students within a designated group of undergraduate majors.

The Undergraduate Academic Advisor 2 plays a key role in promoting student success through proactive advising practices that help students make informed decisions and stay on track toward degree completion. This position provides individualized academic advising, assisting students with course planning and selection based on their academic progress, personal interests, and career goals. The advisor helps students understand and navigate university policies, degree requirements, academic procedures, and institutional expectations.

In addition, the Undergraduate Academic Advisor 2 connects students with a wide range of campus resources designed to support their academic achievement and overall well-being, including tutoring and academic support services, career development resources, financial assistance programs, and mental health and wellness services.

Working with a moderate level of independence, the Undergraduate Academic Advisor 2 completes structured assignments and contributes to projects of varying complexity. The position applies advanced advising concepts, established practices, and technical knowledge to support student needs and departmental objectives. The advisor communicates information on routine and standard matters, collaborating with colleagues and receiving guidance from senior staff when appropriate. Success in this role requires a strong understanding of academic advising principles, student development theory, and higher education practices gained through education and professional experience.

Additional responsibilities include supporting new student orientation programs by preparing materials and delivering presentations to students and their families as needed. The Undergraduate Academic Advisor 2 also facilitates lessons within a student survey course using established curriculum and instructional materials, participates in professional development and training activities, and may evaluate and grade student assignments.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong academic advising skills, a commitment to student learning and development, excellent interpersonal and communication abilities, and a collaborative approach to supporting student success.

Responsibilities:

• Academic Advising and Student Support Provide and document individualized academic advising for undergraduate students regarding degree and program options, academic standards, General Education requirements, prerequisite coursework, and major-specific requirements. Consult with or escalate complex student issues to senior advising staff as appropriate. Assist students in navigating university processes and connect them with campus resources that support academic success, career development, financial well-being, and mental health. Advise students experiencing academic difficulty, including those on academic probation. Review and process academic transactions, including course adds/drops, withdrawals, and program changes.
• Orientation Support New student orientation programs by assisting with the preparation of orientation materials and resources. Present information to students, parents, and family members during orientation sessions as needed.
• Projects, Teaching, and Professional Development Under general direction, participate in and occasionally lead special projects that support departmental and campus objectives. Identify opportunities for process improvements or new initiatives and provide recommendations to management. Engage in ongoing professional development and participate in unit- and university-wide training and development opportunities. Contribute input to the Newark campus course schedule to help ensure that course offerings meet student degree and program requirements. Teach lessons in the university survey course and may independently instruct specialized course sections. Use established curriculum and instructional materials, making only minor modifications as needed to effectively deliver content. Attend required training sessions, grade student assignments as assigned, and assist with the review and updating of course materials.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master's degree or 2+ years of equivalent experience (Master’s required for teaching). Years of relevant experience required: 0.

Preferred Qualifications

• Preferred minimum years of relevant experience: 1-2

• Ability to explain complex information in a clear and student-friendly manner.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey program requirements to diverse audiences, including students, parents, faculty, and campus partners.
• Demonstrated understanding of multiculturalism, inclusion, and best practices for supporting diverse student populations.
• Proficiency in performing routine transactions and navigating the Student Information System (SIS).
• Strong interpersonal skills, including active listening, effective interviewing, and thoughtful questioning techniques.
• Knowledge of and commitment to maintaining student privacy and confidentiality in accordance with FERPA guidelines.

This position is based at the Ohio State University, Newark Campus in Newark, Ohio, with a target hiring range of $45,000 to $51,000

The Ohio State University at Newark offered its first classes in 1957 with a mission to provide affordable, open access to Ohio State for all Ohioans. The Newark campus sits on 188 acres and shares the campus with Central Ohio Technical College.
