Position Summary:

The Clinical Innovation Lead leads the clinical function within Digital Health Research and is the single point of clinical accountability for the organization, spanning early research through late development. The role sets the clinical standards that other functions build against and directs the physicians and clinical consultants who apply those standards across programs.

This is a practicing physician who brings clinical, technical, product, interpersonal, and translational expertise. Unlike an embedded individual contributor, this role owns clinical capacity as a resource: it decides which programs receive clinical depth, at what intensity, and by whom. It reports directly to the Head of Digital Health Research alongside the other function leads, and it grows the clinical team as the breadth of clinical areas supported by DHT expands.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of physicians and clinical consultants supporting DHR, with dotted line to the programs they are embedded in.
  • Advise on clinical and physiologic endpoint criteria at biosensor and algorithm maturity gates.
  • Advise on any feature that makes or implies a health claim, whether it originates in Digital Health Research or in Product. Research that transitions into Product carries its clinical requirements with it, and the Head of Clinical Science remains the accountable clinical reviewer through launch.
  • Advise on intended use, indications, and clinical claims language before external release, in partnership with Regulatory Affairs and Quality.

Health AI: Guided by principles of minimizing harm, maximizing health benefit, and increasing adoption of Samsung Health products.

  • Health Assistant: Own and manage the clinical workstream for the AI health assistant end to end — content and knowledge-base design, evaluation, and iteration against deployed performance. Define what the assistant is clinically permitted to say for each use case, where it must defer to a clinician, and how it handles red-flag presentations. Partner with the GenAI engineering team to translate those standards into system behavior, and set the clinical acceptance criteria a release must meet before it ships. Direct the physicians and clinical consultants who author, review, and grade assistant outputs
  • AI Coach: Own clinical direction across the AI coaching portfolio — the physiologic reasoning behind each recommendation, the clinical breadth and reach, and the boundaries of what a coach may advise for a given user profile. Work alongside the product team to keep coaching content evidence-grounded and matched to user risk. Set the clinical oversight model for deployed models: what is reviewed pre-launch, what is monitored post-launch, and what triggers rollback. Direct the clinical consultants who advise on the specialty criterion of the AI coach.

Clinical Support of the R&D Portfolio: Guided by principles of minimizing harm, maximizing health benefit, and increasing adoption of Samsung Health products.

  • Early algorithm and hardware endpoints: Own the definition of appropriate algorithm endpoints for potential productization, such as type of biomarker (for example classifier, regressor). Set, with the algorithms team, the go/no-go decision criteria for algorithm maturity, based on performance against clinically relevant endpoints.
  • SaMD and Wellness product development: Advice product requirements, use case specific product claims, and portfolio prioritization. Determine the clinical and user experience measures that belong in product requirements to minimize harm and maximize health benefit to users.
  • Study design: Advice study design for research studies across Sponsored Research, algorithms, and biosensor work, including protocol development, IRB approval, and medical monitoring as needed. Ensure standardization against appropriate references and accepted study designs.

Leading the Clinical Function: building and directing clinical capability for DHR.

  • Team leadership: Manage the physicians and clinical consultants supporting DHR, including those embedded in GenAI efforts. Allocate clinical capacity across programs, set priorities, and decide what the function takes on and what it declines.
  • Team growth: Define and execute the hiring plan for additional clinical domain expertise (for example women’s health, endocrinology) as the breadth of clinical areas supported by DHT continues to expand.
  • Clinical strategy: Contribute the clinical perspective to DHR strategy and to communications for senior leadership, and represent clinical science in strategic task force initiatives.
  • External network: Engage external PIs and thought leaders for consulting, research PI support, and advisory board involvement, as a means of sourcing clinical expertise the team does not hold in house. Represent Samsung’s digital health research in public forums and grow industry and academia collaboration with university centers.

Required Skills:

  • MD with expertise in technical innovation and data science, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • 14+ years combined clinical practice and device/digital health work experience
  • 3+ years in patient care with focus on lifestyle and preventative medicine
  • Experience building or deploying products within healthcare, digital health, or consumer health applications
  • Excellent understanding of human physiology in conditions across health and wellness
  • Experience working with or advising digital health focused startups
  • Strong cross-functional leadership skills, with experience working across Product, Engineering, Data Science, and Clinical teams
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
