Summary :

Job Profile Summary The Surgical Technologist Extern provides clinical services related to the perioperative care of the surgical patient to meet the needs of patients, families and significant others. Customizes care for the unique needs of each patient and their surgical procedure, the surgeon’s preferences and the care setting. This care is provided under the direct supervision of Surgical Technologists and RNs. The ST Extern role is a temporary position designed to facilitate the transition from student to graduate which is mutually beneficial to the student and organization. During this education focused program, the Extern is provided with a preceptor and is not counted toward the staffing of the unit

Job Description:

**Must be able to work a minimum (1) 8-hour shift every other week. Will be able to pick up more hours as training allows**

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Performs skills and procedures as per the department competency checklist under direct supervision of Surgical Technologist or Registered Nurse Provides quality, cost-effective care through individualization and collaboration with team members.
• Provides patient care that meets the growth and development, cultural diversity and special needs appropriate to the patient population served.
• Takes responsibility for professional growth and development.

Qualifications

• Current enrollment in Surgical Technologist training program

Physical Demands

• Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance
• Job classification is exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties
• Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments
• Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
• Occasional high noise level in work environment.
• Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents.
• Occasional contact with aggressive and or combative patients.

Position requires compliance with department specific competencies.
