Обслуживание котлов: Поддержание работы паровых и водогрейных котлов, подбрасывание топлива в топку, контроль за процессом горения и работой вспомогательных механизмов (насосов, вентиляторов). Контроль и регулирование: Слежение за показаниями приборов, контроль давления, температуры и других параметров, регулирование режима работы котла в соответствии с заданными показаниями. Чистка и удаление отходов: Очистка топок котлов от золы и шлака, их удаление при помощи механизмов в установленное место. Участие в ремонте: Участие в проведении планово-предупредительных работ, ремонте и обслуживании котлов и вспомогательного оборудования. Техническая эксплуатация: Пуск, остановка и переключение котлов, участие в подготовке оборудования к работе в отопительный сезон. Учет и отчетность: Учет отпускаемой теплоты, ведение записей в журнале по работе механизмов и оборудования. Безопасность: Соблюдение правил техники безопасности, пожарной безопасности и охраны труда.

Медицинская комиссия, обязательное обучение, инструктажи по охране труда, знание устройства и принципов работы котельной, а также соблюдение правил пожарной безопасности и промышленной санитарии. Кочегар должен быть физически подготовлен, пройти стажировку и иметь удостоверение о присвоении разряда по профессии.
