Job Description:

Internship - 2027 Undergraduate 3M Brand Design Intern - Safety & Industrial Business Group (SIBG)

The role of Undergraduate Design Intern is intended to start in Summer 2027.

Collaborate with Innovative 3Mers Around the World

Choosing where to start and grow your career has a major impact on your professional and personal life, so it’s equally important you know that the company that you choose to work at, and its leaders, will support and guide you. With a wide variety of people, global locations, technologies and products, 3M is a place where you can collaborate with other curious, creative 3Mers.

An internship is a temporary position within 3M. Interns typically work a full-time schedule throughout a 10-12 week assignment. This position is limited to working 899 hours per service credit year.

This position provides an opportunity to transition from other private, public, government or military experience to a 3M career.

About the Safety & Industrial Business Group:

The Safety and Industrial Business Group (SIBG) at 3M offers a diverse range of products designed to enhance safety, productivity, and efficiency across various industries. Key product categories include personal safety (respiratory, hearing, eye, and fall protection), abrasives (coated, bonded, and non-woven), adhesives and tapes (industrial adhesives and various tapes), electrical markets (electrical tapes, wire connectors, and cable management), automotive aftermarket (collision repair and automotive tapes and adhesives), and industrial and safety markets (safety solutions and industrial maintenance products).

About 3M Design

Inside 3M’s Safety and Industrial Business Group, 3M Design operates as a multidisciplinary internal creative team supporting brand, product, packaging, digital experience, and design research across industrial, safety, and professional-use markets. As a 3M SIBG Design Intern, you will apply your design skills to real business challenges

while collaborating with experienced designers and cross-functional partners across business, marketing, engineering, product, and technical teams. Interns gain exposure to a human-centered design process, translating customer insights and business needs into brand-aligned solutions across physical products, digital experiences, packaging, and visual systems. Project work may include brand design, visual asset development, packaging systems, design research, product design, UX/UI design, industrial design, prototyping, testing, brand audits, and system refinement. Through onboarding, coaching, and hands-on project experience, the internship is designed to help you build foundational design skills, gain exposure to global design challenges, and explore a meaningful career path in design.

The Impact You’ll Make in this Role As an Undergraduate Brand Design Intern in the Safety & Industrial Business Group (SIBG) team, you will help create clear, compelling, and brand-aligned design solutions that support 3M’s industrial and safety products, customer experiences, and business priorities. You’ll contribute to visual design projects across marketing, product launches, packaging, digital content, sales materials, presentations, and customer-facing communications.

You’ll work closely with Designers, Marketers, Product Managers, Communications partners, and other cross-functional teams to bring ideas to life through strong visual storytelling, thoughtful layouts, and consistent application of 3M brand standards. You’ll receive mentorship, structured onboarding, and hands-on opportunities to strengthen your skills in brand design, visual communication, and business-to-business design.

Key Expectations for a Brand Design Intern:

Be Motivated You’ll take ownership of your work and bring creativity, curiosity, and attention to detail to each assignment. While support and guidance are available, we’re looking for someone who is organized, reliable, and eager to contribute to meaningful design projects.

Be Brand-Focused and Collaborative You’ll help translate business goals, customer needs, and technical information into clear visual communications that align with 3M’s brand standards and customer experience expectations. Our projects rely on strong communication, teamwork, and the ability to partner across creative, technical, and business functions.

· Apply 3M brand standards and design systems to ensure consistency across customer-facing experiences.

· Collaborate with marketing, product management, communications, design, and business teams to understand project goals and audience needs.

· Help simplify complex industrial or safety-related information into clear, engaging visual communication.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
