This position reports to:
IS Manager
__
As an intern, you will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through various projects. Each day, you will acquire knowledge by performing tasks as directed. You will also showcase your skills by supporting ABB’s operations and enhancing personal education/employment opportunities.
The work model for the role is onsite/hybrid in Cary, NC.
You will be mainly accountable for:
- The agents and connectors: building the AI layer's agents, tools and data connectors in Python, reading from our business systems through APIs and SQL.
- Multi-step workflows: designing agent flows in LangGraph or a comparable framework, with human approval built in. You'll work with read-only access and sandbox environments; nothing writes to a live system without human approval.
- The right retrieval for each question: a database query, an API call or a document search, and knowing which one fits.
- Evaluation: building evaluation sets, measuring whether answers are right, and improving them.
- Weekly delivery: shipping small pieces every week and demoing them to the team and to business users.
- AI assistants, owned: using AI coding assistants openly, and being able to explain every line you commit.
- Documentation: writing up what you build and learn so the next person can pick it up.
Qualifications for the role:
- Currently enrolled in a master's program, or in the third or fourth year of a bachelor's program, in computer science, mathematics, data science or industrial engineering in the United States. Master's students preferred.
- Available to continue part-time, remotely, for about six months after the summer, alongside your studies.
- Intern must have reliable transportation to and from the worksite during the summer.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship now and in the future.
- Python you've shipped: a project someone else can run, with git and tests. Include a link with your application.
- Hands-on experience building with LLMs: model APIs, tool calling, structured outputs.
- SQL, including joins across multiple tables.
- A working understanding of REST APIs and JSON.
Valued, not required: LangGraph or another agent framework; embeddings, vector search and RAG; MCP; knowledge graphs (for example Neo4j); a cloud platform; any exposure to supply chain, manufacturing or ERP concepts.
