The posting

Aalborg University is seeking an outstanding Professor in Mathematical Finance and Statistics to lead the newly established Research Center for Energy Mathematics, a strategic collaboration with Centrica Energy.

As the Centrica Energy Chair, you will work at the interface of academic research and challenges in energy markets, quantitative analytics, data science, and algorithmic decision-making.

Your work tasks

This is primarily a research and research-leadership position. You will conduct international leading research in energy mathematics, develop a long-term research agenda, publish in top-journals, attract external funding, and strengthen Aalborg University's position in the field.

As Director of the Research Center for Energy Mathematics, you will build and lead a research community of PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, visiting scholars and international collaborators. Collaboration with Centrica Energy will provide opportunities to engage in real-world challenges while preserving academic freedom and the highest scientific standards. You will supervise PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and master’s students. Teaching and administrative responsibilities are expected to be limited and organized to support the position’s focus on research and research leadership.

The aim is to establish a globally recognized center that advances fundamental and applied research in energy mathematics and contributes to academia, society, and the green energy transition

**Who we are looking for

**

We seek a researcher with a strong academic track record and the ambition to shape the emerging field of energy mathematics. Relevant expertise may include stochastic optimization, stochastic analysis, uncertainty quantification, mathematical modelling, machine learning, causal inference, computational mathematics, or related disciplines.

We welcome candidates with mathematical depth and broad intellectual curiosity, especially researchers who address fundamental questions about complex and uncertain energy systems and markets across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Applicants must demonstrate research experience at the highest international level through an outstanding publication record, doctoral supervision, competitive research funding and international collaboration.

In addition to scientific excellence, we are looking for a colleague who is enthusiastic about building and leading a collaborative research environment and with an openness to dialogue with industry.

Qualification requirements

Applicants must be able to document a high degree of original academic production at an international level and experience from teaching at different levels. Including tests/exams, course/study programme management as well as contributions to the development of teaching activities and teaching material.

Emphasis is placed on the extent, to which the applicant, has developed the academic discipline from a research and teaching perspective.

Emphasis may moreover be placed on the applicant’s ability to carry out and develop research-based public-sector consultancy. Also, emphasis will be placed on an assessment of the applicant’s ability to perform research and teaching management tasks and possibly fulfil other functions, for example in relation to the university’s external cooperation.

Emphasis will also be placed on the applicant's ability to undertake pedagogical supervision, supervision and academic assessment work.

Additional q ualification requirements

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in mathematics or in a closely related discipline and have a sustained record of original and influential research.

Emphasis will be placed on the ability to formulate and pursue ambitious research agendas and to establish and lead an internationally recognized research environment. Experience with competitive research funding, international collaboration, and mentoring doctoral and postdoctoral researchers is important.

Applicants must preferably document university teaching and supervision experience at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral level.

Leadership experience with research teams, centers, or large collaborative projects is a strong plus. The ability to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and engage with partners in academia, industry, and the public sector is also valued.

The assessment will consider scientific achievements, academic leadership, educational contributions, supervision experience, international standing, and the potential to strengthen Aalborg University's research and education in energy mathematics.

Who we are

The position is anchored at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Aalborg University, one of Scandinavia's leading environments for applied mathematics, stochastic modelling, and data-driven research. The department offers an international and collaborative research environment with strong links to academia, industry, and society.

The Research Center for Energy Mathematics is established through a strategic collaboration between Aalborg University and Centrica Energy, a leading European energy trading and energy management company active in power, gas, renewable energy, algorithmic trading, analytics, and quantitative research. While the professorship is an independent academic position at Aalborg University, the collaboration with Centrica Energy provides exceptional opportunities for research inspiration, access to relevant data and problems, and interaction with leading practitioners in quantitative energy trading and analytics.

Together, Aalborg University and Centrica Energy aim to create a globally recognized center in energy mathematics that attracts outstanding researchers and students from around the world.
