The posting

Applications are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Physics and Astronomy programme. The position is available from February 2027 or later.

Research area and project description:

The Department of Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus University, invites applications for a PhD position, starting February 1st, 2027, offering applicants an exciting opportunity to join a new research project on orbitronics and metastable states in two-dimensional quantum materials.

The project involves fabrication of devices and their integration with the existing angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) infrastructure at the ASTRID2 light source to discover quantum geometric effects and their link to new forms of transport phenomena.

The aim of the project is to develop new types of 2D material devices that can realize orbital, spin and valley Hall effects that form the basis for prototypical memory devices. A series of novel infrastructures will be applied to achieve these goals, including semi-automated fabrication systems in inert environments, clean-room facilities for device production, micro-focused synchrotron light for ARPES characterization at ASTRID2 as well as ultrafast femtosecond laser pulses for optical control of the materials.

The major activities include:

  • Design and manufacturing of advanced 2D devices that are compatible with the microARPES experiment at ASTRID2 with the specific aim to uncover orbital-driven phenomena in materials.
  • Combining synchrotron and ultrafast laser sources to visualize, excite and control electronic states with distinct orbital and spin textures in quantum materials.
  • Isolation, twisting and stacking of monolayer metallic and semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide, including materials that are sensitive to ambient conditions.
  • Development of new techniques to isolate and integrate such air-sensitive materials with devices for photoemission experiments carried out in UHV conditions.
  • Applying a state-of-the-art laser beamline integrated with the ASTRID2 synchrotron light source for femtosecond control of electronic structure of 2D materials.

For technical reasons, you must upload a project description. When - as here - you apply for a specific project, please simply copy the project description above, and upload it as a PDF in the application. If you wish to, you can indicate an URL where further information can be found.

Qualifications and specific competences:

Applicants should hold or be about to obtain a Master’s degree in Physics, Nanoscience or similar and with a keen interest in Condensed Matter Physics (or related field).

The applicant is expected to be a team-player that is strongly motivated to work with students, scientists, engineers and external collaborators as well as being supportive and open towards other group members.

The applicant should be highly motivated towards building expertise in relation to ultra-high vacuum experiments, synchrotron and laser beamlines as well as 2D material fabrication.

Place of employment and place of work:

The place of employment is Aarhus University, and the place of work is Department of Physics and Astronomy, Ny Munkegade 120, DK-8000 Aarhus C., Denmark.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
