This role is critical to protecting the firm's license to practice and reputation as it continues to grow. The Compliance Attorney will report to firm leadership and work closely with accounting, case management, and operations teams to ensure every dollar held in trust and every aspect of the firm's practice meets California State Bar requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Client Trust Account (IOLTA) Compliance

  • Oversee compliance with Rule 1.15 (Safekeeping Funds and Property of Clients) and related trust accounting rules
  • Partner with accounting/bookkeeping staff to ensure accurate three-way trust reconciliations, proper disbursement timing, and segregation of earned vs. unearned fees
  • Design, implement, and monitor internal controls and audit procedures for trust account management
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies; prepare responses to State Bar inquiries or audits related to trust accounting
  • Train attorneys, paralegals, and staff on trust account handling, settlement disbursement procedures, and recordkeeping requirements

General Compliance & Risk Management

  • Serve as the firm's subject-matter expert on California State Bar Rules of Professional Conduct and relevant statutes
  • Develop, update, and maintain firm-wide compliance policies, procedures, and training materials
  • Conduct new-hire and ongoing compliance training for attorneys and staff
  • Monitor conflicts-of-interest processes and client intake compliance
  • Oversee compliance with confidentiality, data privacy, and recordkeeping obligations across departments
  • Track regulatory changes and assess their operational impact across departments
  • Liaise with outside ethics counsel or the State Bar as needed on compliance matters
  • Maintain compliance documentation and audit trails to support firm risk management
  • Conduct periodic internal audits across departments to identify and remediate compliance gaps

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school; active member in good standing with the State Bar of California
  • 1–5 years of experience in legal ethics, regulatory compliance, or law firm risk management (plaintiff-side employment/PI/workers' comp firm experience a plus)
  • Strong working knowledge of the California Rules of Professional Conduct, particularly Rule 1.15 (Safekeeping Funds and Property of Clients)
  • Experience with trust account reconciliation and law firm accounting practices (familiarity with legal practice management/accounting software such as Clio, CosmoLex, or similar is a plus)
  • Excellent judgment, discretion, and the ability to communicate compliance requirements clearly to non-legal staff
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills; comfortable managing multiple concurrent reviews and deadlines
  • High degree of integrity and comfort delivering firm but constructive feedback to attorneys, staff, and leadership

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
