About the Service

Sycamore House is a welcoming, homely residential care home supporting children and young people aged of 5-18 with physical and learning disabilities.

Our four-bedroom home provides a safe, nurturing environment where each young person's interest routines and passions are celebrated.

A bit about the role

As a Residential Support Worker (Shift Leader), you'll support day-to-day care, including personal needs, promoting independence, and helping children engage in activities that inspire them - whether that's exploring nature, crafting, or gaming. You'll also assist with transporting children to school, appointments, and family time, building positive relationships and contributing to a fun, supportive atmosphere.

We're looking for someone with experience working with children (residential care experience preferred but not essential) who is enthusiastic, reliable, and willing to learn. This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference in a small, close-knit home where your skills and passions can help our children thrive.

How you’ll help to create brighter futures

  • Working towards identified outcomes and goals to give them a positive future.
  • Helping them in all aspects of their daily lives (including personal care) and supporting their health and happiness, helping them to work towards identified outcomes and goals.
  • Helping to promote independence.
  • Maintaining safeguarding practices within the service.

Let's talk about you.

Are you resilient and have a positive approach to change and challenge? We are looking for someone with a ‘can do’ attitude to join our team. Ideally you will have:

  • Demonstrable experience of working in a care setting and developing positive relationships through trust.
  • Application of a range of techniques to co-ordinate and communicate with service users and their families.
  • Demonstrate a solution focused approach to address problems, individually and in a team setting.
  • Demonstrate emotional resilience to respond to the challenging nature of the role.
  • Possess a Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or recognised equivalent) or if you do not possess this you must be prepared to complete this within 2 years of commencing employment with us, full support will be provided.
  • Experience in a trauma informed setting, residential short breaks, or children's services.

What We Offer

  • Full training and ongoing support.
  • A highly rewarding role where you’ll see the impact of your work every day.
  • The chance to be part of a dedicated, values-driven team.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development.

Why Action for Children?

Every child should have a loving home, food, warmth, the chance to grow and learn - the support to cope with life’s challenges. But too many children don’t. By bringing your passion and unique skills and experience, you’ll help us change that where it really matters.

We've been driven by love to take action for children for over 150 years, giving them the protection and practical help they need. A lot’s changed since 1869. But what children really need, hasn’t. So as long as children need us, we’ll be here.

Diversity, equality, and inclusion

At Action for Children, we’re committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels respected, valued, and able to thrive. We know that racism and discrimination create barriers, and we’re taking active steps to challenge these inequalities in our organisation and in the communities we serve.

We strongly welcome applications from people who are Black, Asian, or from other racialised and ethnically marginalised communities, as well as disabled people, who are currently under‑represented in our workforce. We are committed to removing barriers in our recruitment processes and ensuring fair access to opportunities.

We also encourage applications from men, who are under‑represented in our Children’s Services roles. We recognise that people hold multiple identities, and we value the richness this brings to our team.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
