Job Description

The Civil Engineer III - Transportation Design will support the planning, design, and delivery of North Carolina and regional transportation infrastructure and roadway corridor improvement projects. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, this individual will contribute technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle, developing design solutions that enhance mobility, safety, and connectivity for public and private sector clients. This role offers opportunities to lead design tasks, guide the development of less experienced engineers, and expand project delivery responsibilities while working on increasingly complex transportation projects.

This position is ideal for a transportation professional seeking to build upon a strong technical foundation while taking on greater leadership and project responsibilities. The role provides opportunities to lead key design efforts, develop project management skills, support client engagements, and help shape transportation solutions that positively impact communities and infrastructure networks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and coordinate roadway, highway, and transportation design plans from concept development through final design.
  • Lead assigned design tasks and work packages, coordinating activities with project managers, technical leads, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Develop roadway horizontal and vertical alignments, typical sections, grading plans, drainage considerations, maintenance of traffic concepts, and geometric design elements.
  • Perform engineering analyses and prepare technical reports, calculations, specifications, cost estimates, and supporting documentation.
  • Utilize OpenRoads Designer and other engineering software to develop design models, plans, and project deliverables.
  • Support project delivery efforts by assisting with scope development, scheduling, budgeting, and quality management activities.
  • Provide technical guidance and coaching to early-career engineers and engineering staff to support their professional growth and development.
  • Coordinate with clients, agencies, subconsultants, and internal stakeholders to facilitate successful project execution.
  • Participate in design reviews and quality control processes to ensure compliance with project requirements, applicable standards, and industry best practices.
  • Contribute to proposal development, technical approach preparation, and other business development activities as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 4 years of experience in transportation engineering with an emphasis on roadway and highway design or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Experience preparing engineering plans, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation for transportation projects.
  • Experience with OpenRoads Designer and related transportation design software.

Preferred:

  • 6 years of transportation engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in North Carolina or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • Experience with state DOT, county, municipal, or toll agency transportation projects.
  • Knowledge of roadway geometric design criteria, traffic considerations, and transportation design standards.
  • Transportation related engineering design tools/applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead design tasks and coordinate multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Experienced communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with clients, agencies, and project stakeholders.
  • Experience reviewing and mentoring the work of junior engineering staff.
  • Familiarity with project delivery processes, quality control procedures, and construction documentation.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
