Overview

We are seeking an experienced Techno commercial Manager specializing in utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with 10 + years of expertise in project development, technology selection, techno commercial analysis, System/Plant configuration, System/Plant and Balance of system/Plant optimisation, bid preparation, and financial closing for large grid scale BESS + PV Solar energy projects. The ideal candidate will bring both strategic insight and technical proficiency in PV solar and battery technology, technology selection & optimisation sizing, life cycle costing analysis for grid operation alongside Solar PV plant. This role will be instrumental in advancing our portfolio of BESS projects, combining commercial acumen with technical skills to achieve successful project execution from planning through to financial close.

Your Job Functions (Duties & Responsibilities)

  • Function as the key Technical Manager between the development team, clients, technology providers, OEMs, EPC and service partners.
  • Prepare all technical documentation for proposals.
  • Examine RFPs and other customer documentation to define project scope, schedule, specifications, and technical prerequisites within energy storage applications.
  • Act as a resource for discussions around product specifications and value engineering
  • Work cross-collaboratively with Project Development team to coordinate bid packages.
  • Lead the BESS technology selection (e.g., lithium-ion, sodium-ion, flow batteries) and PV technology selection based on based on project-specific requirements, cost, and operational considerations. life cycle costing and techno commercial analysis including Sizing, design technical cum operational requirements and specification of the PV Plant and BESS system and Balance of Plant and Systems including the PCS , LV/MV. HV Electrical systems and SCADA and Energy management system.
  • Responsible for the Power System studies and integration of the BESS system to run alongside the PV Plant and the grid including frequency regulation & response, peak saving, voltage regulation, primary and secondary response, harmonics, short circuit current and droop characteristics in compliance with grid code and renewable integration.
  • Lead the develop battery container layouts and coordinate with electrical, civil, Solar and wind experts for complete packages to meet client needs.
  • Responsible for the sizing and design of PV Plant including the selection of module, tracker and PCS and HV electrical systems
  • Lead & access the third-party measurement campaign (met mast, LIDAR etc) and Solar resource assessments Energy Yield assessments for technology analysis and selection
  • Responsible for the performance and technical drawings and documents.
  • Optimize system design and layout for efficient PV solar and energy storage and retrieval, considering factors like cycles, round trip efficiency, degradation, augmentation and maintenance needs that maximize system reliability, performance, and longevity.
  • Responsible for the technical compliances to the international standards and Codes, certifications, local regulations, environmental regulation and ESIA
  • Lead Modelling energy storage system performance, coordinate, obtain and integrate BMS, EMS and SCADA designs for the battery system from third party monitoring companies.
  • Develop technical specifications and scopes of work for EPC/System Integrator
  • Investigate design factors such as function, durability, performance, efficiency, and contractual requirements.
  • Lead the preparation and submission of competitive bids for BESS projects, aligning technical solutions with financial models to meet client and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop comprehensive techno-commercial proposals that include risk assessment, CAPEX/OPEX analysis, technical design, and regulatory compliance.
  • Development of the O&M budget for the term of operation
  • Analyze RFPs and RFQs to tailor bid responses that address project-specific grid services and performance requirements.
  • Lead technical negotiations for key project contracts, including EPC, battery supply agreements, and operation and maintenance (O&M) contracts.
  • Establish strong relationships with technology providers, integrators, and grid operators to ensure smooth project execution.

Qualifications & Skill Sets

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, advanced degree in Power electronics or relevant certifications preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in utility-scale project development, with a focus on PV, BESS and integration.
  • Strong technical expertise of PV and BESS technology design principles, battery technology evaluation, system sizing, and performance optimization, degradation, augmentation and safety aspects.
  • Up to date with current technologies of commercial scale
  • Proficiency with system modeling and simulation tools for BESS and PV (e.g., ETAP, HOMER, PVSyst)
  • Strong knowledge of PCS, BMS algorithms (SOC/SOH), and EMS/PMS control systems.
  • Familiarity with relevant codes and standards (e.g., IEEE, IEC, NFPA).
  • Excellent project management skills and experience in managing cross-functional teams and complex timelines.
  • Exceptional negotiation, communication, and presentation skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage stakeholder relationships.
  • Previous experience with similar developers and projects in Middle East and North Africa preferred.
  • This role is ideal for a commercially astute, technically skilled professional looking to drive the successful execution of large-scale PV/BESS projects from a techno-commercial perspective.
