About The Role

Dementia Adviser | Croydon | 35 hours per week | Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm | Permanent | £25,391 - £27,450 Per Annum

Every person’s experience of dementia is different. Sometimes, having someone who takes the time to listen, understand what matters and help make sense of the support available can make a real difference.

As a Dementia Adviser in Croydon, you’ll be there for people affected by dementia when they need information, guidance and support. You’ll listen to what is happening in their lives, help them understand their options and share information in a way that feels clear, relevant and manageable.

You don’t need previous experience of working in dementia, healthcare or social care to apply. We’re much more interested in the skills and qualities you can bring. If you’re a thoughtful listener, communicate with warmth and confidence and enjoy learning so that you can help others, you could be a great fit for this role.

This is a primarily home based role, supporting people across Croydon. You’ll also spend time in the local community for home visits, groups and events, typically around once or twice a week depending on the needs of the service.

You’ll be joining a small, busy team, where your work will be varied and rewarding. One day you might be having a one to one conversation with someone about the support available to them, another could involve a home visit, connecting with people at a local event or speaking with a small group.

You won’t be expected to know everything about dementia from day one. What’s important is that you’re willing and able to learn, take in new information and share it with people in a way that helps them understand their choices and decide what is right for them.

Croydon is home to diverse communities, including South Asian and Black African and Caribbean communities. We want our services to feel welcoming and accessible to the communities we support, so we particularly welcome applicants who can bring an understanding of different cultures and communities. Additional community language skills would be valuable in this role, so if you speak another language, we’d really like to hear about it in your application.

About you

There isn’t just one type of person who makes a great Dementia Adviser, and your skills may have been developed through work, volunteering or other parts of your life.

You could thrive in this role if you:

  • Listen with empathy and take the time to understand what someone really needs.
  • Communicate clearly and confidently, helping people understand information, options and strategies without making things feel overwhelming.
  • Feel comfortable talking with people one-to-one and in small groups.
  • Are curious and willing to learn about dementia and the different support options available and can turn that knowledge into useful information for others.
  • Are confident using IT, including recording information accurately on databases.
  • Can work independently from home while also travelling into and around Croydon for home visits, groups and community events when needed.
  • Communicate sensitively with people from different backgrounds, recognising that everyone’s circumstances and experience of dementia will be different.

Above all, we’re looking for someone who connects well with people and wants their work to make a difference.

You don’t need to tick every box or have done this exact role before. If you recognise yourself in what we’ve described and feel you have skills you could bring, we’d encourage you to apply.

Interviews are provisionally planned for the week commencing 2 November 2026 and are expected to take place via Microsoft Teams.

About You

About Alzheimer's Society

Dementia is the UK's biggest killer. One in three people born in the UK today will develop dementia in their lifetime.

At Alzheimer's Society, we're the UK's leading dementia charity and the only one to tackle all aspects of dementia by giving help and hope to people living with dementia today and in the future. We give vital support to people facing the most frightening times of their lives, while also funding groundbreaking research and campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be.

Together with our supporters, we're working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives.

Our values make sure that our focus is clear for the challenges and opportunities ahead and remind us of what we all stand for.

Our commitment to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging

We need to ensure the voices around our table better reflect and understand the communities we exist to serve. We strongly encourage individuals to apply who have a disability, impairment or health condition or individuals who identify as Black, Asian or from another minority ethnic background, as these groups are currently under-represented at Alzheimer's Society.

We want everyone we work with, as a colleague, volunteer, supporter, or someone we support, to feel included and that they belong at Alzheimer's Society.

Our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy here along with our internal employee forum and Employee Lived Experience network groups help us promote inclusion and belonging, becoming an engaged and inclusive organisation for all our people.

Our hiring process

During your recruitment process we want to make sure that you bring your whole self and can be at your best. We are working hard to ensure our recruitment process is as inclusive as possible, so please do inform us of your experience and anything you think we could do better by completing our candidate survey when you apply. Please also contact Alzheimer's Society Talent Acquisition Team via [email protected] for application support or any adjustments you might need.

To ensure fairness and consistency to select the best candidate for this role, all our applications are anonymised up until an interview has been confirmed. We recognise the benefits of AI, but if you're considering using it to submit your application, we encourage you to reflect on the value it truly adds. AI tools often lack the personal touch and authenticity that set candidates apart. We want to hear your unique perspective, experiences, and skills, so we encourage you to showcase them in your own voice.

We try to avoid closing roles early where possible, however if we receive a high volume of applications, we may close earlier than the advertised closing date. Should this occur, we will aim to provide you with at least 48 hours' notice.

We are committed to safer recruitment and ensuring the welfare of those we work with, due to the nature of some of our roles, we might need to carry out a Criminal Record Check at the relevant level. You can read more information via our Website.

Giving back to you

Our employees work hard every day to make a true difference in people's lives. We are proud to support them with a range of benefits, recognition and many options for working agilely, all contributing to a strong work life balance. We also have various learning programmes to support you in your development and help you grow to realise your potential and shape a career with Alzheimer's Society.

You can also visit our Working for Us pages, which give you more information about what it's like to be an employee at the Society.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
