The posting

Are you a software development leader who wants your teams' work to matter at a global scale? Amazon Regulatory & Trade Services (ARTS) builds the technology that moves products, software, and technology across international borders safely, lawfully, and efficiently — assigning import/export classifications, estimating duties and landed costs, determining trade eligibility, and ensuring products meet regulatory and safety requirements. As a Senior Manager, Software Development, you will own the strategy and execution for a broad, complex suite of cross-border trade services relied on by Amazon businesses worldwide and by external partners such as selling partners, vendors, customs brokers, and carriers.

With tariffs increasingly shaping global commerce, the work this team does has never been more visible or more critical. The team is also re-evaluating its charter, which means you will have a direct hand in shaping the vision, technical direction, and organizational structure from the ground up. You will lead multiple engineering teams across sites, set multi-year technical direction, and partner across engineering, product, and program organizations to deliver at scale. This is a role for someone energized by ambiguous, high-stakes problems and who takes as much pride in growing engineering leaders as in the systems they build.

Key job responsibilities - Define and drive a multi-year technical strategy and roadmap for cross-border trade and compliance services, aligning engineering investment with customer needs and organizational goals. - Build, mentor, and grow an inclusive organization of engineering managers and senior engineers across multiple sites, with strong mechanisms for hiring, career development, and performance management. - Partner with product management, technical program management, and business and compliance leaders to set priorities, resolve dependencies, and deliver software solutions that scale globally. - Design and operate services that meet a high standard for accuracy, reliability, and security while keeping friction low for customers. - Evaluate and integrate emerging tools and practices — including generative AI — where they improve team productivity, and drive system-design decisions that account for scalability and long-term maintainability.

A day in the life You start your morning reviewing operational and quality dashboards for your services before joining a design review with senior engineers on an upcoming architecture change. After a one-on-one coaching session with one of your managers, you work through a cross-team prioritization decision with product and program partners. Later you draft a strategic narrative for an upcoming leadership review, then close the day checking in with a recently onboarded engineer. Because your teams and partners span multiple regions and time zones, part of your craft is building the mechanisms that keep globally distributed teams aligned and moving quickly.

About the team ARTS is a global engineering team at the center of Amazon's cross-border trade technology. We reduce the complexity of global trade — controlling the cost of compliance and maintaining the accuracy that keeps products moving safely and lawfully across borders. We design solutions that work across programs and marketplaces, serving a wide range of customers from internal Amazon businesses to selling partners, vendors, and regulators. We are actively reshaping our charter and technical roadmap, making this a rare moment to join and leave your mark. We care about building an inclusive environment where engineers and leaders at every level can learn, contribute, and grow.

- 10+ years of engineering experience - 5+ years of engineering team management experience - 10+ years of planning, designing, developing and delivering consumer software experience - Experience partnering with product or program management teams - Experience managing multiple concurrent programs, projects and development teams in an Agile environment

- Experience partnering with product and program management teams - Experience designing and developing large scale, high-traffic applications

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
