The posting

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.

You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

Are you passionate about building innovative service architectures that solve real world problems in the context of one of the largest networks on Earth? Do you want to be part of a group that is reducing the complexity of operating the global AWS network backbone for our customers? The AWS network is one of the largest networks in the world, and its performance and availability are key differentiators in delivering the best cloud computing platform available.

The AWS Network Backbone Organization owns containerized solutions that protect the AWS network against impact every single day. The team is looking for a Software Development Engineer (SDE) to help expand solutions that support the backbone of the entire AWS global network.

In this role, you will work in a hybrid team of software, systems development, and network engineers to understand requirements and extend platforms that support software-defined networks (SDN). You are joining a high performing team interacting closely with other engineering teams across USA, Ireland and Australia.

Millions of customers rely on Amazon’s network for using our retail websites, accessing content on their Kindles, and building applications and businesses on top of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud. Our goal is to become The Infrastructure Platform for the world – achieving this goal requires automated and massively scalable software services. Success depends on our world-class network infrastructure, and our network depends on our automation.

This position involves on-call responsibilities, typically for one week every two months. We don’t like getting paged in the middle of the night or on the weekend, so we work to ensure that our systems are fault tolerant. When we do get paged, we work together to resolve the root cause so that we don’t get paged for the same issue twice.

Our team is dedicated to supporting new team members. Our team has a broad mix of experience levels and Amazon tenures, and we’re building an environment that celebrates knowledge sharing and mentorship. Our senior engineers truly enjoy mentoring more junior engineers and engineers from non-traditional backgrounds through one-on-one mentoring and thorough, but kind, code reviews. We care about your career growth. We try to assign projects and tasks based on what will help each team member develop into a better-rounded engineer and enable them to take on more complex tasks in the future.

Key job responsibilities You will be responsible for the design, implementation and quality of services you deliver. Your experience working in software development or in an enterprise environment will help us implement automated solutions across a variety of applications and systems. You’ll also: • Design, implement, test, deploy and maintain innovative solutions to transform service performance, durability, cost, and security. • Write high quality distributed system software. • Work in an agile, startup-like development environment, where you are always working on the most important stuff. • Work closely with our Network/Systems/Software Engineering teams to ensure fast and smooth roll-out of new designs and products, as well as assist with deployment and sustaining of networking software tools. • Use data to measure success and take responsibility for the quality of your service and, regardless of their source, strive to prevent faults from impacting your customers. • Use your strong problem-solving skills, ability to understand and scope solutions, work across teams to drive solutions. • Contribute to documentation of process and procedures. • Learn from others and help grow those in your team to achieve their best. • Take ownership, consider tradeoffs and lean on your expertise to ensure the job gets done. • Participate in an on-call rotation with your team.

A day in the life Engineers in the Backbone Enterprise and Regional Engineering (BERE) organization have a wide range of responsibilities; we work with internal partners to develop and implement the next-generation platforms along with the tooling ecosystems to support these platforms driving efficiency and scalability through the automation of builds, configuration deployment, and the scaling of capacity. As our network is one of the largest in the world, there is no blueprint allowing our engineers to develop solutions to complex challenges that we face daily. We encourage durable solutions that look around corners while taking into consideration our customer needs from a cost, performance, and reliability perspective. Our team develops tooling that provides the required visibility and control of traffic across the network, while prioritizing the automatic mitigation of events to minimize the impact to our customers during events.

In this role you: • Work in a 24x7 team on-call rotation, with ability to drive into workplace for critical events/needs. • Manage customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure. • Sit at the computer during scheduled work hours with appropriate breaks while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail. • Travel to data center/network sites and Amazon/customer offices as needed.

About the team Within AWS Networking, the Backbone Enterprise, and Regional Engineering (BERE) organization is responsible for the design, implementation, and operations of a wide array of networking infrastructure that provide global connectivity between all AWS Regions and edge locations. BERE provides the massive scale required to support our AWS customers and internal services, via a network that experiences 70% growth annually. In addition, they have teams that are responsible for the design and operation of our global corporate office and Data Center network, allowing tens of thousands of Amazonians to perform their daily tasks in support of our customers.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
