The posting

Do you have a passion for highly available Tier 0 services such as DNS? Are you interested in leading an elite team of engineers building and operating some of the largest DNS systems in the world? Do you want to work on deep, technical problems that span a variety of core topics in computer science ranging from databases to networking to distributed systems to numerical analysis to security?

In Route 53, our mission is to make DNS invisible for our customers. It just works. Are you ready to create systems to power one of the largest e-commerce companies in the world? Amazon.com has over 70 million customers, and developers all over the world rely on our storage, compute, and virtualised services via Amazon Web Services. We support systems at massive, and ever-growing, scale. We rapidly integrate new technologies to expand our customer offerings. Our success depends on our world-class network infrastructure and our goal is to become “The Infrastructure Platform” for the world.

As our team grows, the AWS Infrastructure DNS team is seeking enthusiastic and talented Software Development Manager to lead a team that builds and operates the large-scale DNS systems used to drive the Amazon fleet. You will own systems that are critical to the platforms that Amazon's global retail, AWS and Kindle businesses run upon -- the DNS services in Amazon's data centers and integration of Amazon's systems with the likes of Amazon Route 53 to manage public DNS.

This is your opportunity to pave the path for a new generation of DNS systems, to grow as a technology leader, and to work with some really smart people. You are great fun to work with. Our company credo is “Work hard. Have fun. Make history”. You are smart, ambitious, love what you do and instinctively know how to make work fun. You enjoy being a really great people manager. Building, motivating and mentoring a world-class systems & software engineering team is the most important part of this role. You should have a proven track record in recruiting and retaining top talent and excel in day-to-day people and performance management tasks.

You have strong Agile product management and delivery experience. In this role, you will create and implement product roadmaps for the team using Scrum methodologies. This will include helping innovate and invent new value-add services layered on top of our existing services. You will need excellent technical project management skills to deliver product roadmap items as well as other cross-team projects.

You have a strong engineering background with an understanding of OO Design and DNS Technologies, network and OS expertise is a plus. Ideally, you have past experience working as a senior software development engineer. You enjoy keeping your technical skills reasonably current, to the point that you can still contribute to architecture discussions. You regularly take part in deep-dive troubleshooting exercises and drive technical post-mortem discussions to identify the root cause of complex issues.

You also have strong operational experience and have a track record operating highly available fault tolerant systems. You know how to run a tight, lean, efficient operation. You will want to measure everything and be very data driven using metrics, monitoring and alarming to measure and improve the operational processes and performance of your team. You thrive operating in a fast moving, dynamic environment.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
