The posting

Amazon DynamoDB powers many of the world's fastest-growing businesses, including Lyft, Airbnb, and Redfin. It also powers enterprises such as Samsung, Toyota, and Capital One. Within Amazon, it runs high-traffic properties including Alexa, Amazon.com, and every Amazon fulfillment center. DynamoDB is one of the largest distributed database systems in the world. We believe it is always Day 1, and we keep improving the service and adding new capabilities.

The DynamoDB Scale and Metering team owns two charters that support how DynamoDB grows and how it runs as a business.

The team removes scalability bottlenecks and gives customers stronger isolation. It re-architects DynamoDB's control plane and data plane components into independent units. This limits the blast radius of failures and lets the service grow without hitting shared-resource limits. The team also works directly with customers as they onboard to the new architecture.

Metering sits inside DynamoDB's billing construct. It measures how every table, request, and byte of storage is consumed. Accurate, timely metering drives customer bills and DynamoDB revenue. Errors here affect customer trust and the business directly.

We are looking for a Software Development Manager to lead this team. You will set a multi-year strategy across both charters. You will partner with teams across DynamoDB and AWS to deliver it. You will hire and develop engineers, make architectural decisions, and hold a high bar for operational excellence on systems that customers and the business depend on.

Key job responsibilities - Lead and grow a high-performing engineering team that owns scale, isolation, and metering across DynamoDB's core systems. - Define the team roadmap and drive a multi-year strategy for both charters. - Partner with DynamoDB component teams to re-architect their systems for scale and isolation. - Sequence the work so availability and performance are not put at risk. - Work with customers onboarding to the re-architected systems. Understand their isolation and scale requirements and turn them into delivery plans. - Own the correctness, completeness, and timeliness of DynamoDB metering. - Drive architectural decisions and technical strategy across all charters with senior and principal engineers. - Build mechanisms that scale team operations while keeping end-to-end ownership of delivered software. These include operational reviews, deployment safety, metrics, and on-call health. - Recruit, mentor, and develop engineers. Build a culture of ownership, inclusion, and technical depth.

About the team The team sits at the intersection of DynamoDB's architecture and its business. The scale and isolation work shapes how the service grows over the next decade. Metering decides how every customer is billed. Engineers on the team work across many DynamoDB components and gain broad exposure to the service.

- 3+ years of engineering team management experience - 7+ years of engineering experience - 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience - 1+ years of providing technical leadership and project management for all aspects of the software development lifecycle experience - 1+ years of developing large-scale, multi-tiered distributed software systems using Java, C#, or C++ experience - 1+ years of developing large-scale, multi-tiered distributed software systems using service-oriented architecture experience - 1+ years of developing large-scale, multi-tiered distributed software systems using distributed programming experience - 5+ years of Software Engineer, Software Developer, or related occupational experience - Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field - Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations - Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
