Job Description
The Amex Digital Labs team drives innovation at American Express by originating, incubating, and managing products and platforms that are essential to our customers’ digital lives. We are a fast-paced team that leverages emerging technologies to develop digital payment and financial services products and engaging Membership experiences for Card Members. We often collaborate with technology companies and strategic partners to bring products to the market.
As a Principal Product Designer within Digital Labs, you will be a hands-on champion of AI-enabled product design.
You bring exceptional UX, UI, and visual design craft, but also think strategically, working alongside Product Managers and Engineers to identify the right opportunities, shape product direction, and bring new experiences to life.
You embrace new ways of working, using AI-assisted tools and agentic workflows to accelerate exploration, prototyping, and delivery. You know how to move quickly from ambiguity to a strong design direction, making thoughtful tradeoffs between speed, quality, and impact without getting lost in unnecessary detail.
Responsibilities

- Lead end-to-end UX and UI design, translating customer insights and business priorities into intuitive, cohesive, and high-quality product experiences.
- Rapidly explore, prototype, and validate ideas, establishing strong design direction early and progressively refining solutions as they move toward production.
- Uses design tools to create storyboards, wireframes, prototypes, information architecture diagrams and user journey maps for demonstrations and user testing.
- Bring strong product judgment, balancing customer needs, technical feasibility, speed, and design quality to drive meaningful outcomes.
- Creates and maintains UI/UX resources such as content templates, samples and guidelines, in order to streamline the design process for designers and developers
- Create tangible future-state concepts that help stakeholders understand new possibilities and make informed product decisions.
- Set a high bar for interaction design, usability, accessibility, and visual craft.
- Influence product and design decisions through clear thinking, strong storytelling, and the ability to bring ideas tangibly to life.
AI-Native Design & Emerging Experiences
- Help define and push the boundaries of the future of AI-powered Membership experiences, exploring new interaction paradigms including conversational interfaces, intelligent recommendations, and agentic experiences.
- Translate emerging AI capabilities into intuitive, useful, and trustworthy customer experiences that strengthen engagement and loyalty.
- Develop and evolve interaction patterns, design principles, and approaches that help shape AI-native experiences across Digital Labs.
- Actively adopt AI-assisted and agentic design workflows to accelerate exploration, prototyping, iteration, and delivery.
AI-Enabled Workflows and Collaboration
- Champion AI-assisted and agentic design workflows to rapidly prototype, test, and iterate working experiences.
- Work directly with Engineers to bridge design and code, leveraging working prototypes, reusable components, and code-informed decisions to accelerate delivery and reduce traditional handoffs.
- Continuously experiment with new tools and ways of working, helping evolve how Design, Product, and Engineering collaborate to move from idea to working product faster.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in product design, UX design, interaction design, or a related discipline, with a portfolio demonstrating successful digital product experiences.
- Strong product thinking and demonstrated experience designing and shipping consumer-facing web or mobile products.
- Experience partnering closely with Product Managers and Engineers throughout the full product development lifecycle.
- Demonstrated experience using AI-assisted tools and workflows to accelerate design exploration, prototyping, or product development.
- Comfort creating interactive or code-based prototypes, using tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or similar platforms.
- Strong understanding of interaction design, user-centered design, information architecture, visual design, and usability principles.
- Ability to move confidently between high-level concepts and production-ready design, applying the appropriate level of fidelity for the problem at hand.
- Experience working with design systems, reusable components, and modern digital product development practices.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to articulate design decisions, influence product direction, and work effectively through ambiguity.
- A growth mindset and genuine curiosity about how AI and emerging technologies are changing the way digital products are designed and built.
