The U.S. Consumer and Digital Technology (USCDT) Team brings together foundational strategic technology capabilities in digital experience engineering (Mobile and Web), AI/ML, marketing technology, enterprise communications, travel and lifestyle, and automation, grounded in our data technology model that prioritizes data governance. It employs a ground-breaking focus with development responsibilities for customer-facing capabilities that deepen and expand digital engagement, as well as core technical capabilities that cut across business lines and customer segments.
American Express Ads, Offers, and Dining Technology brings together our advertising, offers, and dining platforms to elevate the Membership experience. The team drives the expansion of Amex Offers, the development of innovative digital advertising capabilities, and leads the end-to-end technology integration and platform development of our dining services to create seamless connections between diners, restaurants, and the broader American Express Membership ecosystem.

Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, testing, deployment, documentation, and operation of end-to-end software solutions across frontend and backend systems.
- Build reliable, performant, accessible, and intuitive web experiences using modern front end technologies and frameworks.
- Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services, APIs, integrations, and data-driven applications.
- Own major features and technical initiatives throughout the software development lifecycle, from design and implementation through production operation and continuous improvement.
- Make consistent, high-quality engineering contributions with limited oversight and help establish a high bar for engineering quality, reliability, and maintainability.
- Act as a technical leader by following and improving engineering practices, including shared tooling, reusable components, coding standards, documentation, and development workflows.
- Lead and participate in code reviews and develop comprehensive automated testing across the stack, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing.
- Debug complex software issues across frontend, backend, data, and infrastructure layers; identify root causes and drive fixes for defects and production incidents.
- Build and maintain reliable synchronous, background, and event-driven processes, including appropriate retry, recovery, and failure-handling strategies.
- Improve application and system observability through structured logging, meaningful metrics, monitoring, alerting, and practical operational documentation.
- Drive improvements to application performance, accessibility, dependency management, code quality, and technical architecture.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, engineers, infrastructure teams, and other cross-functional partners to deliver intuitive, user-focused solutions.
- Partner across engineering and infrastructure teams to support safe, reliable, and repeatable releases.
- Adhere to and advocate for security, compliance, accessibility, and operational best practices throughout the development lifecycle.
- Mentor other engineers and help strengthen technical skills and engineering practices across the team.
Leadership
- Operate effectively and independently with minimal direction while taking ownership of complex technical problems.
- Influence team and technical outcomes by proposing thoughtful improvements and constructively challenging outdated approaches.
- Increase team productivity by improving workflows, reducing friction, and creating tools and patterns that help engineers deliver stronger results faster.
- Set a high bar for engineering quality, reliability, security, accessibility, and maintainable code.
- Mentor and support other engineers while encouraging sound technical judgment and balanced decision-making between delivery speed and long-term sustainability.
- Collaborate effectively across engineering, product, design, and infrastructure teams and communicate technical decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical partners.
- Demonstrate continuous learning and help the team evaluate and adopt technologies and engineering practices that meaningfully improve our products and development processes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of professional software development experience.
- Hands-on experience designing, building, deploying, and operating business-critical web and backend applications.
- Strong understanding of modern web application architecture across frontend, backend, APIs, data stores, and production environments.
- Strong experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and web fundamentals, including HTML and CSS, along with experience using modern frontend frameworks such as React.
- Backend development experience with Java.
- Experience designing, building, integrating, and supporting REST and gRPC APIs.
- Experience with distributed systems, algorithms, data structures, and database design.
- Practical experience with relational and non-relational databases, including data modeling, query optimization, and schema evolution.
- Experience operating production applications, including troubleshooting, incident response, performance tuning, monitoring, and reliability improvements.
- Understanding of modern frontend engineering practices, including accessibility standards, responsive UI patterns, browser performance, and application performance optimization.
- Experience with modern software development practices and tooling, including version control, CI/CD, automated testing, code reviews, and iterative delivery.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills with the ability to reason across application layers and identify root causes of complex issues.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, particularly when working with product, design, engineering, and infrastructure partners.
- Comfortable using AI-assisted engineering tools to accelerate development, testing, debugging, and troubleshooting while applying strong technical judgment.
- Commitment to continuous learning and thoughtful adoption of new technologies, tools, and engineering practices.
