About Enterprise Architecture:

Enterprise Architecture is an organization within the Core Technologies unit at American Express and it is a key enabler of the company’s architecture & technology strategy. The four pillars of Enterprise Architecture include:

  1. Architecture as Code: this pillar owns and operates foundational technologies that are leveraged by engineering teams across the enterprise.
  2. Architecture as Design: this pillar includes the solution and technical design for transformation programs and business critical projects which need architectural guidance and support.
  3. Governance: this pillar is responsible for defining technical standards, and developing innovative tools that automate controls to ensure compliance.
  4. Colleague Enablement: this pillar is focused on colleague development, recognition, training, and enterprise outreach.

About the Role:

We are looking for a Senior Engineer I to help design, build and operate the enterprise integration and event-driven platforms that connect American Express systems at scale. This is a hands-on senior engineering role, and you will own architecture solution, tooling and delivery for high-throughput, low-latency user interfaces & APIs & backend databases design & development in multi-region production environments, and you will set the technical direction that other engineers build against.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build and manage enterprise platforms and shared technology services for messaging, event distribution and system-to-system integration used by engineering teams across the enterprise.
  • Design and build the operator-facing surfaces for these platforms: self-service onboarding portals, topic and schema management consoles, and flow monitoring views, owning the full stack from the UI components through the APIs that back them.
  • Architect high-throughput, low-latency event-driven systems using publish/subscribe, queue-based and streaming patterns, and define the topic taxonomies, message contracts and canonical schemas that govern them.
  • Lead platform modernization and migration work — moving producers and consumers off legacy middleware and monolithic app servers onto containerized, cloud-native microservices with phased roadmaps, parallel-run validation, reconciliation and zero-outage cutovers.
  • Engineer resiliency into the platform: multi-region active-active topologies, endpoint failover, dead-letter handling, duplicate detection, and failure isolation so one flow cannot degrade another.
  • Own the delivery pipeline end to end - CI/CD, externalized configuration, release verification gates and documented rollback runbooks.
  • Build production observability: throughput and latency dashboards, log analytics, alerting, and data-quality/reconciliation checks between source and target streams.
  • Identify opportunities to apply LLMs and AI/ML to engineering problems - schema and mapping generation, anomaly and exception classification, reconciliation summarization - with human-in-the-loop review, accuracy baselines and deterministic fallbacks.
  • Take your place as a core member of an agile team driving the latest development practices: writing code and unit tests, working with API specs and automation.
  • Raise the engineering bar for the team - design reviews, HLD/LLD discipline, coding and review standards, test-coverage and security gates, and technical mentoring of junior engineers.
  • Partner with product, infrastructure and business stakeholders to translate objectives into technical designs, and articulate trade-offs clearly to both engineering and senior leadership audiences.

Qualifications

  • Preferably a BS or MS degree in computer science, computer engineering, or other technical discipline
  • 10+ years of software development experience
  • Experience in Full Stack development.
  • Experience in LLMs & Prompt Engineering
  • Experience in Process Management, Case Management, Work Management is a plus.
  • Experience in ML, Cognitive OCR, Agentic AI automations driving cost savings.
  • Production cloud experience (AWS preferred): container orchestration, streaming and storage services, parameter/secret management and infrastructure as code.
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise messaging and streaming platforms
  • Extensive experience in designing and implementing large scale platforms with high resiliency, availability, and reliability.
  • Experience with CI/CD tooling (Harness, Jenkins, GitLab or equivalent) and container platforms (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, OpenShift).
  • Strong data skills: relational databases and SQL/PLSQL, NoSQL stores, XML/XSD/XSLT and JSON schema design, and data-quality/reconciliation engineering.
  • Experience with observability and log analytics tooling (Dynatrace, Splunk, ELK or equivalent).
  • Python for automation, data engineering or ML is a plus.
  • Strong experience in applications with high throughput and performance
  • Experience with micro services architectures and service mesh technologies is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and lead technical work across distributed onsite/offshore teams.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and exploit them to their optimal potential
  • Ability to effectively interpret technical and business objectives and challenges and articulate solutions.
  • Every member of our team must be able to demonstrate the following technical, functional, leadership and business core competencies, including:
  • Agile Practices

  • Programming Languages and Frameworks – Hands on experience in some or all the following is preferred: Javascript, Typescript, ReactJS, NodeJS, NextJS, API design & development, Backend Development on relational & Graph Database, Java, Python, Go, React, Envoy, gRPC, ProtoBuf, JSON, CouchBase, Cassandra, Redis, Cloud infrastructure & engineering.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
