The posting

Core mission: The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for scientific research using neutrons. Every year we host over 2000 visits by scientists, who come to the Institute to carry out world-class research.

Cryogenic fluids are at the heart of our activities: without them, it would not be possible to conduct experiments at very low temperatures and high magnetic fields. We are looking for a technician who will be responsible for cryogenic fluid distribution and helium recovery - an activity with scientific, economic and environmental implications. The technician will also help to design our future cryogenic systems.

Your tasks: You will join the team of the Services for Advanced Neutron Environments, where you will be responsible for cryogenic fluid distribution and helium recovery. In this role, you will: - Perform regular checks to ensure that the distribution and recovery systems are working properly. - Perform maintenance and regulatory requalification of equipment, and upgrade measurement electronics. - Produce monthly reports on helium consumption and recovery. - You will also participate, from time to time, in the design and construction of cryogenic systems.

Your profile: - You have a Level 5 qualification (NVQ, BTEC HNC/HND, foundation degree or equivalent) in physical measurements. - You are proficient in the use of spreadsheets and web applications, as well as embedded electronics, and have some knowledge of mechanical engineering. - You are a strong team player with an inquiring mind and a meticulous approach to your work. A service-oriented attitude and strong interpersonal skills would be highly appreciated. - You are interested in developing unique devices, are keen to work in a multicultural environment, and enjoy tackling technical challenges. - You are proficient in English, the working language in our international environment.

What we offer: Quality of life - This position is based in Grenoble, a hub for research and technology, ideally located in the heart of the French Alps (just 3 hours from Paris/Provence by train, 1 hour from Lyon international airport and 1 ½ hours from Geneva). It is important for us that our staff achieve a healthy work-life balance. We therefore offer home working (under certain conditions), generous annual paid leave entitlement and a host of other benefits that you will discover when you arrive!

Prospects - We guarantee you a secure permanent position based in Grenoble in a multicultural scientific environment.

Benefits - We offer generous social benefits (expatriation allowance, excellent health cover), moving and relocation assistance (under certain conditions) and an annual productivity bonus. We also offer language courses for you and your partner and subsidies for the use of public transport and the staff canteen, as well as for holidays and a variety of cultural and sports activities. For more details, visit https://www.ill.eu/careers/working-at-the-ill/employment-conditions.

Sounds interesting? Then why not take your next career step with us by applying online - preferably in English - via our career portal by 01/11/2026, quoting reference number 26/43. Please note that all applicants are subject to administrative screening (background checks). For this post, medical fitness (including for work under ionising radiation) is required. We are committed to equal opportunities and diversity and therefore welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates.

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. United by our passion for progress and technology, we drive science and research forward every day. Together, we can pave the way for discoveries that will help to make our world a better place.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.

We make the most of the background you have. The CV uses every piece of relevant proof your profile holds, and one of the 25 readers reads your whole profile and flags what the CV left out.
