The posting

Join an international research environment developing the software infrastructure needed for next-generation fusion modelling. You will work at the interface between scientific computing, high-performance computing and fusion research, contributing to software used within major European and international fusion programmes. The position offers the opportunity to shape sustainable scientific software and integrated modelling tools with applications ranging from present-day fusion experiments to ITER and future fusion reactors. Information about the research group The Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy (PPFE) group at Chalmers conducts research on the modelling, simulation and analysis of magnetically confined fusion plasmas, with a particular focus on tokamak physics. A major part of the research is aimed at developing predictive capabilities for transport in fusion-relevant plasmas and validating models against experimental observations. The group collaborates with major international fusion facilities and contributes to research supporting ITER and the development of future fusion devices.Modern fusion research increasingly relies on integrated multi-physics simulations that combine plasma transport, equilibrium, heating and current drive, turbulence, MHD stability, plasma-wall interactions, and synthetic diagnostics. At Chalmers, we develop and maintain scientific software, workflows, and data infrastructure that enable modular, scalable, and reproducible fusion simulations. Current activities include development of the European Transport Simulator (ETS), the Transport Code Interfaces (TCI), integrated modelling frameworks based on the ITER Integrated Modelling & Analysis Suite (IMAS), workflow coupling using MUSCLE3, and execution on high-performance computing systems. The activities are closely integrated with the European fusion research programme EUROfusion and with international developments related to ITER. Job description As a Research Software Engineer, you will contribute to the development, integration, maintenance, and long-term sustainability of software infrastructure for integrated fusion modelling. Your responsibilities will include: Develop, maintain and improve scientific software associated with integrated workflows such as ETS and TCI. Develop coupled multi-physics workflows using IMAS and MUSCLE3. Integrate numerical simulation codes written in Python, C/C++ and Fortran. Design reusable software components, interfaces, APIs and workflow infrastructure. Develop and optimise workflows for high-performance computing environments. Support migration and development of software for current and future versions of the IMAS Data Dictionary and Access Layer. Apply modern software engineering practices, including automated testing, continuous integration, documentation, version control and code review. Collaborate with researchers and software developers within national and European fusion programmes. Contribute to the development of sustainable and FAIR research software, supporting reproducible computational research. Support users through documentation, training and technical guidance.

Contract terms Permanent employment Qualifications Applicants should have: A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Scientific Computing, Engineering Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Physics or a related discipline. Strong programming skills in Python and experience with C/C++ and/or Fortran. Experience in developing scientific or research software. Experience with collaborative software development and tools such as Git, automated testing, continuous integration and documentation systems. Experience working in Linux environments. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Good written and spoken English.

Experience in one or more of the following areas is considered an advantage: High-performance computing, including MPI, OpenMP, GPU programming or distributed computing. Scientific workflow systems and multi-physics coupling. IMAS, including IDSs, the Data Dictionary and Access Layer. MUSCLE3 or similar workflow-coupling frameworks. Integrated modelling for magnetic-confinement fusion. Container technologies such as Docker or Apptainer. HDF5 and other scientific data formats. FAIR research software and data, provenance and research data management. EUROfusion or ITER software environments. Numerical modelling of plasma transport, equilibrium, turbulence, MHD, heating and current drive, or plasma-material interactions. Development of or contributions to open-source scientific software. Experience with the European Transport Simulator (ETS) or Transport Code Interfaces (TCI).

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
