Job Description:

The Lead Web Developer, Drupal Platform provides technical and people leadership for ASU’s enterprise Drupal web platform, Webspark, and related web services. This role leads a team of web developers responsible for building, maintaining, releasing, and improving Drupal-based websites, themes, modules, integrations, accessibility practices, and managed hosting workflows across ASU’s web ecosystem.

This is a hands-on web leadership role for someone with strong Drupal, PHP, CMS, accessibility, and enterprise web platform experience. The position combines technical direction, code review, release coordination, team mentorship, platform improvement, and support for ASU’s broader community of site owners, editors, developers, and service partners.

The Lead Web Developer, Drupal Platform plays a critical role in sustaining the reliability, security, accessibility, and scalability of ASU’s web ecosystem while supporting continued modernization across TechEd services. This role also helps guide the responsible use of AI-assisted development practices to improve documentation, automate routine work, support testing and code review, accelerate troubleshooting, and create better digital experiences for students, faculty, staff, and the broader ASU community.

As with all members of the Enterprise Technology team, this role carries core responsibilities, including fostering a sense of belonging and cultivating a culture that is relational, visionary, and empowering. With a strong emphasis on authenticity and compassion, this position is dedicated to embodying and advancing our culture.

A cover letter is required with application to be considered for this position. Please briefly answer the questions below:

  • Describe experience you have with other CMSes and web application frameworks.
  • Do you have full stack experience?
  • What cloud providers have you worked with?

Pay Rate: $94,300.00 - $103,370.00; DOE

Essential Duties:

  • Lead Drupal and Webspark platform development: Provide technical leadership for ASU’s Drupal-based web platform, including Webspark, custom modules, themes, configuration, integrations, and related platform components.
  • Coordinate web platform releases: Oversee and perform regular releases for ASU’s Drupal multisite codebases. Ensure releases are tested, documented, communicated, and coordinated with appropriate developers, site owners, service owners, and technical partners.
  • Support enterprise web platform stability: Serve as a technical owner and escalation point for complex issues involving Drupal, Webspark, Acquia, managed hosting, integrations, performance, accessibility, code quality, and production support.
  • Lead and mentor web developers: Supervise, coach, and support a team of web developers across varying levels of experience. Help establish development goals, support onboarding, guide priorities, review technical work, and promote consistent web development practices.
  • Guide Drupal and web platform strategy: Contribute to the roadmap for ASU’s Drupal and web platform ecosystem. Identify opportunities to improve architecture, reduce technical debt, modernize development practices, strengthen accessibility, and improve long-term platform sustainability.
  • Develop and maintain custom web solutions: Write, review, test, and deploy custom Drupal modules, themes, scripts, integrations, and automation to support enterprise web needs. Support large-scale web efforts such as site launches, site decommissions, Drupal upgrades, WordPress-to-Drupal migrations, and platform standardization.
  • Strengthen web accessibility practices: Apply accessibility best practices in development, theming, component work, QA, documentation, and release processes. Partner with accessibility stakeholders to support WCAG alignment across ASU web platforms.
  • Support managed web hosting and platform operations: Work with hosting, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and platform partners to support Acquia or comparable managed hosting environments, environment management, caching, performance, deployment workflows, and platform reliability.
  • Improve web development workflows: Support continuous improvement of Git workflows, QA practices, deployment pipelines, configuration management, automated testing, release planning, rollback planning, and operational documentation.
  • Advance responsible AI-assisted development: Evaluate and apply AI tools where appropriate to improve developer productivity, support documentation, assist with code generation and review, create tests, streamline troubleshooting, and automate repetitive work while maintaining human oversight, security, quality, and accessibility standards.
  • Support the ASU web community: Develop documentation, training materials, technical guidance, office hours, and support resources for website owners, editors, developers, and service partners using Webspark and related web services.
  • Collaborate across Enterprise Technology: Work closely with product teams, project managers, service owners, cybersecurity, accessibility, infrastructure, analytics, and other Enterprise Technology partners to resolve issues, align priorities, and improve web service delivery.
  • Contribute to team culture and operational excellence: Foster a collaborative, service-oriented team culture focused on quality, accountability, knowledge sharing, continuous improvement, and professional development.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience leading, mentoring, or supervising web developers, Drupal developers, or technical contributors.
  • Strong experience developing, maintaining, and supporting Drupal-based websites or web platforms.
  • Experience with Drupal 10 or newer, including custom module development, theme development, configuration management, content types, views, permissions, and deployment workflows.
  • Experience with PHP, Twig, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern web development practices.
  • Experience supporting enterprise content management systems, multisite environments, or large-scale web platforms.
  • Experience with Acquia, Pantheon, WP Engine, or comparable managed hosting platforms.
  • Experience coordinating web platform releases, QA, stakeholder communication, documentation, and production support.
  • Demonstrated understanding of web accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.1 AA or higher, and experience applying accessibility best practices in web development.
  • Knowledge of Git, version control workflows, code review, automated testing, release management, and environment management.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD workflows, deployment pipelines, caching, CDN services, DNS, web performance, and web security concepts.
  • Experience with Cloudflare or comparable CDN, caching, DNS, or web platform security services.
  • Experience using Jira, Confluence, or similar tools for work tracking, documentation, sprint planning, and technical collaboration.
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear guidance for developers, website owners, editors, service partners, and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools and practices, including code generation, documentation support, test creation, workflow automation, and responsible AI use.
  • Experience evaluating emerging technologies and determining how they can responsibly improve enterprise web services.
  • Experience supporting higher education, TechEd, digital experience platforms, accessibility programs, or complex enterprise service environments.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, documentation, and collaboration skills.

Working Environment:

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 25 pounds.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
