Position Summary

The Ice Technician is responsible for the quality, safety and upkeep of the ice surface at the Stockton Complex. This role delivers professional-level ice for Thunder games and practices, and other ice events. The Ice Technician operates the ice resurfacer, monitors the refrigeration equipment that makes and holds the ice, and works with the event operations team to convert the multipurpose arena between hockey and other events such as concerts, rodeo and family shows.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Ice Operations and Quality

  • Operate the ice resurfacer (Zamboni) before games, between periods, and during practices, skates and community ice events, to FCPHL quality standards
  • Perform scrapes, edging, flooding, and debris removal; keep the ice surface smooth, safe and consistent
  • Measure and record ice thickness, ice temperature and surface conditions; adjust as needed to keep ice playable in all conditions
  • Maintain accurate ice schedules and make sure resurfacing is completed on time for puck drop, intermissions and event start times
  • Perform between-period resurfacing in front of a live crowd with professionalism, speed and safety

Refrigeration and Ice-Making Systems

  • Monitor refrigeration and ice-making equipment, including chillers, pumps and associated controls, and report abnormal readings or malfunctions immediately
  • Keep daily logs of equipment performance, temperatures and pressures
  • Assist with preventive maintenance and follow all lockout/tagout, refrigerant handling and safety procedures
  • Assist with seasonal ice installation (building up and freezing the ice floor, painting base coats, lines, face-off circles and logos) and ice removal at season's end

Rink Setup and Event Conversions

  • Set up, adjust and remove dasher boards, glass, ice dams, player benches, penalty boxes, nets, safety netting and other rink components
  • Support conversions between hockey and other events, including protecting, covering or removing the ice per event requirements
  • Prepare and maintain the game-day ice crew area, supplies and equipment
  • Coordinate with hockey operations, equipment staff, building engineering, event managers and production crews to meet event timelines

Equipment Care and General Facility Support

  • Perform daily and weekly inspections and routine maintenance on the resurfacer, edgers, blades, hand tools and ice-care equipment; handle minor repairs and report larger issues
  • Inspect boards, glass, netting and goal frames and report damage promptly
  • Keep the ice area, tunnels and storage areas clean, organized and safe
  • Follow all arena safety, emergency and operating policies; assist with spill response and incident reporting
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support events and operations

Qualifications

Required

  • Ability to operate an ice resurfacer safely, with prior experience preferred
  • Ability to follow verbal and written direction and work well on a team
  • Valid California driver's license and a clean driving record
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays and varying schedules around hockey games, playoffs and other events
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
  • Comfortable working in front of large crowds and in a fast-paced game environment
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and authorized to work in the United States

Preferred

  • Two or more years of experience in ice maintenance at an arena, rink or similar facility, ideally at a professional or collegiate hockey venue
  • Experience installing, painting and removing ice on a multipurpose arena floor
  • Knowledge of refrigeration systems and ice plant operation
  • Experience with ice edgers, forklifts or other powered equipment (certification a plus)
  • Refrigeration safety awareness certificate or willingness to obtain one within the first 90 days
  • Basic carpentry, welding or general maintenance skills
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Stand, walk, kneel, stoop and climb for extended periods, up to 8 hours or longer on event days
  • Frequently lift and carry objects up to [50] pounds, with assistance for heavier items
  • Work in cold ice-surface conditions as well as warm outdoor conditions during loading and ice-related tasks
  • Exposure to noise, crowds, moving equipment and event lighting
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment, including appropriate footwear, gloves and hearing protection when necessary
  • Late-night hours and extended shifts are common during game days and building conversions

Schedule

Hours vary by event calendar. Expect peak workloads during the hockey season (roughly October through April, plus playoffs), preseason ice installation, and busy event periods. Reduced hours are possible in the off-season, with ice removal and equipment maintenance projects scheduled at season's end.

Compensation

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
