Field Process Engineer Intern

We are seeking a motivated Field Process Engineer Intern to gain hands-on experience supporting process development, optimization, qualification, and troubleshooting activities for advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

As an intern, you will work alongside experienced process and field engineers and collaborate with customer engineering teams and global product and R&D organizations. You’ll gain exposure to how semiconductor processes move from development through qualification and manufacturing while contributing to meaningful technical projects.

Throughout the internship, you will have a defined technical project with clear objectives and deliverables, receive mentorship and technical guidance, participate in hands-on engineering activities, and have the opportunity to present your project results and key learnings at the conclusion of the internship.

What You’ll Be Working On

Process Development & Engineering

  • Support process development, optimization, characterization, and troubleshooting activities on semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
  • Assist with the design, execution, and analysis of experiments to evaluate process performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Analyze experimental and process data to identify trends, relationships, and potential areas for optimization.
  • Gain hands-on exposure to thin-film deposition, semiconductor processing, vacuum systems, equipment operation, and process characterization.
  • Work alongside engineers to investigate process and equipment issues using structured problem-solving techniques.
  • Support process and hardware improvement projects focused on performance, repeatability, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Participate in equipment evaluations, process qualifications, and engineering testing activities.
  • Document experimental results, technical findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Contribute to a defined internship project that addresses a real process engineering or semiconductor manufacturing challenge.

Technology & Knowledge Development

  • Learn how new semiconductor processes and technologies transition from R&D into qualification and manufacturing environments.
  • Assist with collecting and documenting process learnings, experimental results, and best-known methods.
  • Gain exposure to the interaction between process engineering, equipment hardware, materials, device requirements, and manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with engineers across different technical disciplines and locations.
  • Develop an understanding of how process knowledge is documented and transferred across engineering organizations.

Customer & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Gain exposure to a customer-facing engineering environment and learn how field engineers partner with semiconductor manufacturers.
  • Participate in technical discussions and project meetings with experienced engineers.
  • Help prepare technical data, experiment summaries, reports, and presentations.
  • Learn how engineers communicate complex technical findings to cross-functional audiences.
  • Build relationships with process, equipment, product, R&D, service, and customer engineering teams.

What We’re Looking For

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Chemistry, or a related technical discipline.
  • Foundational knowledge of semiconductor processing, materials, thin films, chemistry, vacuum systems, or related engineering concepts gained through coursework, research, laboratory experience, or technical projects.
  • Interest in semiconductor process engineering and advanced manufacturing.
  • Experience designing experiments or analyzing technical data through coursework, research, laboratory work, or previous internships.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis, Design of Experiments (DOE), or data visualization is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable working in a hands-on engineering or laboratory environment.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers and other technical professionals.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn in a fast-paced technical environment.

What Sets You Apart

You do not need to check every box. Relevant experience may come from coursework, academic research, laboratory work, student projects, previous internships, or other hands-on technical experiences.

  • Research or coursework involving semiconductor fabrication or semiconductor devices.
  • Experience with thin-film deposition or characterization techniques.
  • Exposure to ALD, CVD, epitaxy, or other semiconductor processing technologies.
  • Experience with vacuum systems, plasma processing, or semiconductor equipment.
  • Familiarity with analytical or characterization techniques used in materials or semiconductor research.
  • Experience with DOE, statistical analysis, Python, MATLAB, JMP, Minitab, or similar analytical tools.
  • Experience troubleshooting experiments, equipment, or process results.
  • Previous semiconductor, materials science, research laboratory, or engineering internship experience.

What You’ll Gain From the Internship

During your internship, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Take ownership of a meaningful technical project with defined goals and deliverables.
  • Apply classroom and research knowledge to real-world semiconductor engineering challenges.
  • Receive mentorship and technical guidance from experienced process and field engineers.
  • Gain hands-on exposure to semiconductor process development, experimentation, characterization, and troubleshooting.
  • Build experience with DOE, technical data analysis, structured problem solving, and technical documentation.
  • Learn how semiconductor processes move from development through qualification and manufacturing.
  • Gain exposure to a customer-facing engineering environment.
  • Collaborate with engineers across process, equipment, product, R&D, service, and manufacturing functions.
  • Develop your technical communication, presentation, and project-management skills.
  • Build your professional network and explore potential career paths within the semiconductor industry.
  • Present your internship project, results, and key learnings at the conclusion of the internship.

The Internship Experience

This internship is designed to provide a combination of meaningful technical project work, hands-on learning, mentorship, professional development, and exposure to the semiconductor industry.

You’ll be encouraged to ask questions, test ideas, analyze data, collaborate with experienced engineers, and take increasing ownership of your project throughout the internship.

By the end of the experience, you should have tangible technical accomplishments that demonstrate how your academic knowledge can be applied to real-world semiconductor process engineering challenges.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
