Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital Registered Nurse (RN) Job Description

  • Role Overview: Registered Nurses provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their families.
  • Core Responsibilities: Patient Assessment & Monitoring: Perform detailed, timely assessments and monitor patient conditions. Care Planning: Develop and implement individualized care plans, collaborating with physicians and healthcare professionals. Administration: Administer medications, treatments, and perform diagnostic tests. Patient/Family Education: Provide education regarding illnesses, treatments, and preventative health measures. Advocacy & Support: Offer emotional support, act as a patient advocate, and ensure compassionate, patient-centered care. Documentation: Maintain accurate, timely medical records.
  • Job Requirements: Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing). Licensure: Active, unencumbered RN license in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or compact state). Experience: Previous experience in a hospital setting is preferred, though new graduates are encouraged to apply for residency programs. Certification: BLS (Basic Life Support) is required.
  • Key Competencies & Qualities: Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Resilience, empathy, and a commitment to patient advocacy. Ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
