Role Summary: The Senior Mobile Engineer will help design, build, and maintain athenahealth’s patient-facing mobile applications with a focus on native Android and iOS development. Based in Austin, TX, this is a hybrid role that requires strong technical ownership across mobile architecture, performance, accessibility, and secure handling of sensitive health data. This role partners closely with product, design, QA, backend, and clinical stakeholders to deliver reliable mobile experiences for a diverse patient population. This position reports to the Senior Engineering Manager.

What Is Genuinely Hard About This Role
This role requires strong expertise in both Android and iOS development, which is uncommon and important to the work. You will be managing ownership across two native codebases while supporting a patient-facing product with high expectations for security, accessibility, and usability. Success in this role depends on clear communication, thoughtful technical judgment, and steady execution across evolving priorities.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain native Android applications using Jetpack Compose and iOS applications using Swift.
- Own and evolve mobile architecture decisions that support scalability, maintainability, performance, security, accessibility, reliability, and delivery across both platforms.
- Deliver secure, accessible, high-quality patient-facing mobile experiences.
- Partner with product, design, QA, backend, and clinical stakeholders to translate requirements into effective technical solutions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver releases, resolve technical issues, and improve product quality.
- Conduct code reviews, evaluate technical tradeoffs, and contribute to engineering standards that improve consistency and maintainability.
- Apply AI-assisted development tools and workflows to improve productivity, explore implementation options, and support delivery efficiency.
Additional Job Responsibilities
- Support release planning, issue triage, root-cause analysis, and technical problem solving in a small team environment.
- Mentor teammates and share technical knowledge through code reviews, pairing, documentation, and informal knowledge sharing.
- Help raise the team’s overall mobile engineering capability.
- Help improve mobile development practices, tooling, release workflows, and cross-platform consistency.
Expected Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 4 to 10 years of professional software engineering experience.
- Deep, hands-on experience developing Android applications with Jetpack Compose.
- Deep, hands-on experience developing iOS applications with Swift.
- Demonstrated experience owning mobile architecture decisions and leading technical direction on a project or team.
- Strong understanding of mobile app performance, security, and accessibility best practices.
- Experience working in a small, collaborative team where individual ownership and impact are high.
- Strong communication skills and experience partnering with cross-functional, non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience using AI-assisted coding tools and applying AI-driven workflows to improve engineering productivity.
- Experience with healthcare data standards such as Health Level Seven (HL7) and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), or experience in a regulated/compliance-driven environment, preferred.
- Familiarity with Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines for mobile release management, preferred.
- Prior experience mentoring engineers or helping lead a small pod or team, preferred.
Expected Compensation
$113,000 - $193,000
The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates. Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
