Job Description
The Pharmacist Supervisor oversees pharmacy operations and manages a team of direct reports, ensuring regulatory compliance, medication safety, and efficient workflow. This role is responsible for staff training, performance development, and cross-functional communication, while supporting specialty areas such as IV operations, medication safety, or operational services. The Retail Pharmacy Supervisor also serves as the Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) of the retail pharmacy.
- Demonstrate knowledge of standards and regulations and maintains proper documentation.
- Assure readiness with all regulatory agencies and compliance with department, hospital, and AH policies and procedures.
- Assist in the documentation, implementation, and monitoring of medication and patient safety initiatives.
- Maintain safe and efficient operations and workflow in the pharmacy and related areas.
- Support the departmental goals by directly assisting team members and being flexible in roles and responsibilities.
- Communicate effectively and appropriately with healthcare providers and caregivers and assures continuity of pharmaceutical care between shifts and among team members.
- Perform orientation of employees in all job functions and cross-trains when necessary.
- Provide continual training and cross training to employees on new job functions, equipment, and technology.
- Actively participate in annual evaluations and works with team members throughout the year handling performance, discipline issues and career advancement opportunities.
- Participate in quality, safety and other project work related to medication management.
- Support the pharmacist-in-charge in the vision and department goals, assist team members and is being flexible in roles and responsibilities.
- Collaborative member of pharmacy leadership team assisting with departmental initiatives.
Medication Safety:
- Develop, implement, oversee programs designed to ensure the safe use of medications within the healthcare setting.
- Identify, mitigate medication-related risks, conducts safety audits, educates healthcare professionals on safe medication practices, and collaborates with various departments to enhance patient safety.
- Establish policies and procedures to promote safe medication practices.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the medication safety program.
- Conduct regular audits and risk assessments to identify potential medication safety issues.
- Analyze medication error reports and adverse drug events to determine root causes.
- Develop and implement strategies to prevent medication errors and enhance patient safety.
- Provide education and training to healthcare professionals on medication safety practices.
- Develop educational materials and conduct workshops, seminars, and training sessions.
- Participate in interdisciplinary committees and workgroups focused on patient safety and quality improvement.
- Collect, analyze, and report data on medication errors, adverse drug events, and near misses.
- Use data to identify trends and areas for improvement in medication safety.
- Prepare regular reports and presentations for pharmacy leadership and other stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant medication safety regulations and standards.
Qualifications
Education/Experience:
- Graduation from an accredited School of Pharmacy with PharmD required
- Current active registration and licensure with the State of New Jersey Board of Pharmacy required
- 2 years of hospital pharmacy experience with leadership assignments
- PGY1 pharmacy residency preferred
- Experience in medication safety or quality improvement for medication safety

Atlantic Health System Pharmacy Departments service multiple outpatient areas, including several infusion centers, retail pharmacy services, and health clinics. At Morristown Medical Center and Newton Medical Center we have full-service retail pharmacies. They provide prescription medication services to patients and the local community in a convenient location on the first floor of the hospital, inside the Corner Store Gift Shop at Morristown and behind the coffee shop at Newton adjacent to the main entrance. A convenient service provided in our retail pharmacies is having your prescriptions you receive at discharge filled and ready for pick-up before you leave to go home. That means the discharge process will be a little easier for you and your family or friends since there is no need to stop at your retail pharmacy on the way home. The Pharmacy Department also works with physicians and nurses to ensure that medications used at Atlantic Health System are safe and effective. Pharmacists are integrated into your care teams to provide real time medication information and help you get the most benefit from your medications.
