Working at Atlassian

Atlassians can choose where they work – whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity.

To help our teams work together effectively, this role requires you to be located in India. You will work closely with engineering teams in India and Australia and coordinate strategy, priorities, and execution with leadership in the United States.

Atlassian’s Trusted Data Platform (TDP) provides secure, reliable, and scalable data capabilities used by Atlassian product and platform teams. It helps those teams manage persistent customer data while meeting complex enterprise requirements, including data residency, encryption, regulatory compliance, backup and recovery, and operation across multiple cloud environments.

TDP Insights provides the intelligence layer for the Trusted Data Platform. It helps teams understand where data lives, how it moves, what it costs, how reliably it operates, and how customers use TDP services. By transforming high-volume platform telemetry into actionable insights, it supports better decisions about reliability, capacity, cost, compliance, recovery readiness, and developer experience.

Atlassian Data Resiliency (ADR) strengthens end-to-end recovery across TDP. It provides common backup and restore capabilities, recovery assurance, RPO and RTO evidence, validation, restore exercises, and consistent resiliency standards across TDP data platforms.

We are looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the TDP Insights and ADR engineering team. This leader will be accountable for the team’s people, strategy, execution, and operational outcomes. They will partner with senior engineers, product and program leaders, storage and streaming teams, infrastructure teams, security specialists, and Atlassian product organizations to improve how Atlassian understands, protects, and recovers its data.

Success in this role means building a strong engineering organization, delivering trusted platform insights and recovery capabilities, and translating complex customer, reliability, and infrastructure requirements into a clear and executable roadmap.

Team and organizational leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop engineers and senior technical leaders, establishing clear expectations and accountability.
  • Build an inclusive, high-performing team through effective hiring, onboarding, talent development, and succession planning.
  • Develop senior technical and leadership talent by delegating meaningful ownership to senior engineers and emerging leaders.
  • Establish operating practices that support good decisions, predictable execution, and continuous improvement.
  • Manage capacity across strategic investments, customer commitments, operational work, and technical debt.
  • Build an effective distributed-team operating model across India and Australia, with clear alignment and communication with leadership in the United States.

Strategy and execution

  • Define and execute the TDP Insights and ADR strategy and roadmap in alignment with Atlassian’s broader data-platform and cloud-infrastructure goals.
  • Translate enterprise, product, platform, and recovery requirements into measurable outcomes, milestones, and engineering plans.
  • Surface delivery risks, cross-team dependencies, capacity constraints, and required trade-offs early.
  • Establish clear ownership and decision-making responsibilities across TDP Insights, ADR, TDP data platforms, and partner teams.
  • Deliver actionable insights into platform health, customer adoption, cost, data movement, compliance, and recovery readiness.
  • Improve recovery confidence through common capabilities, clear standards, validation, and repeatable restore exercises.

Reliability and customer trust

  • Own the operational health of TDP Insights and ADR capabilities, including availability, data quality, performance, security, compliance, and recoverability.
  • Establish service-level objectives, operational indicators, review mechanisms, and sustainable on-call practices.
  • Establish trustworthy measures for backup coverage, restore validation, RPO and RTO performance, and recovery readiness.
  • Lead the response to material incidents and ensure that lessons produce durable technical and organizational improvements.
  • Ensure that TDP Insights and ADR support enterprise needs such as data residency, encryption, disaster recovery, regulated environments, and multi-cloud operation.
  • Maintain clear visibility into customer and recovery commitments and intervene when delivery, reliability, or data-integrity risks threaten those outcomes.

Technical and platform leadership

  • Partner with senior technical leaders to establish architectural direction and make high-quality technical decisions.
  • Guide the evolution of large-scale telemetry, analytics, backup, restore, and recovery capabilities across multiple cloud providers and specialized operating environments.
  • Ensure designs account for scalability, data locality, security, compliance, data quality, migration safety, operability, and reversibility.
  • Establish technical and operational standards for data collection, processing, analytics, recovery validation, and integration with TDP data platforms.
  • Balance near-term delivery with platform simplification, lifecycle management, cloud portability, and reduction of operational burden.
  • Establish clear technical and operational contracts with storage, streaming, control-plane, infrastructure, and customer teams.

Cross-functional leadership and economics

  • Build trusted partnerships across product, engineering, security, compliance, reliability, infrastructure, FinOps, and customer-facing teams.
  • Coordinate effectively across engineering teams in India and Australia and leadership stakeholders in the United States.
  • Resolve cross-organizational dependencies through explicit owners, acceptance criteria, and delivery dates.
  • Represent TDP Insights and ADR in engineering reviews, leadership forums, operational reviews, architecture discussions, and portfolio planning.
  • Use platform telemetry and operational evidence to inform investment, reliability, capacity, and customer-adoption decisions.
  • Own the cost posture of the team’s capabilities, including infrastructure efficiency, demand forecasting, unit economics, and cost attribution.
  • Make investment decisions that prioritize customer trust, strategic platform value, and sustainable cost efficiency.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Significant engineering leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated success building or operating a business-critical distributed system, data platform, analytics platform, storage service, resiliency platform, or comparable infrastructure product.
  • Strong people leadership skills, including coaching, performance management, organizational design, hiring, and succession planning.
  • Experience converting ambiguous strategies and customer requirements into clear roadmaps, execution plans, and measurable outcomes.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, data platforms, cloud infrastructure, reliability engineering, security, and operational risk.
  • Experience operating large-scale production systems with clear service-level objectives, observability, incident management, capacity planning, and sustainable operational practices.
  • Experience delivering enterprise capabilities such as data residency, encryption, compliance, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, or tenant isolation.
  • Proven ability to lead incident response and convert operational learning into lasting improvements.
  • Strong cross-functional influence and experience resolving dependencies between organizations with different priorities.
  • Experience leading teams and programs across multiple geographies and time zones.
  • Sound judgment when balancing reliability, strategic alignment, delivery speed, cost, and technical sustainability.
  • Clear communication skills appropriate for engineers, executives, product partners, and customer-facing stakeholders.

Experience with high-scale telemetry and analytics systems, streaming and data-processing technologies such as Kafka or Flink, analytical query platforms, distributed storage, backup and restore systems, multi-cloud infrastructure, or internal developer platforms is beneficial but not required.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
